My son have been out of the country for two years and now he's coming visit the family in a couple weeks. I'm anixous about meeting his girlfriend from Croatia. I don't know much about her beside she's from Croatia. What can I do to get know to her better and makes her feel more like a guest?

My wife's best friend is Croation and lives here in Scotland, just make her feel welcome and treat her like one of the family.

It worked for me meeting my wife's family ( German ) and for my wife meeting mine in Glasgow.

The first thing is to learn more about Croatia -- its history, its people, its geography.

Next, find out from your son what language she speaks (probably Croation, but not necessarily). Then go to the library and get some tapes of the language. If your library doesn't have any, ask them to order them, or go on the Internet and find a site. Learn simple phrases, like "welcome" and "hello" and "thank you" and "do you want coffee or tea" and "are you hungry". Stuff like that. She will be thrilled that you made the effort to make her feel comfortable.

And please, you do NOT want her to "feel more like a guest." You want her to feel more like family.
