Instead of typing, can I make a recording of something I need typed and then save the information to my computer?

If your computer has a microphone (or if you have an external microphone) you could use the Sound Recorder program under Accessories in the Windows menu.

You can plug a microphone directly into your computer, or use one of those digital voice recorders and then upload it to your computer with a USB connection.
