I used to feel smart, but it seems like now I don't know as much about a lot of different things. I don't know if it is being away from people, or school or what. I've lost confidence in my intelligence.

Are you kidding me! I have a Master's Degree in Speech Therapy and I have to sneak to the computer to look up things so I can help my 11 year old with his homework (what the heck happened to math since I was in school?) Don't worry, I feel the same way and I think many Moms would agree. Don't lose confidence in your intelligence, things have changed, but you can still offer your child the lessons, morals and strategies for success in life.

I think your bran is like a file cabinet, as you put more info the old gets put to the back of the file, With motherhood you have so much on your mind, keeping them safe, teaching, nurturing then there's school and the more children you have the more your mind is filled with these things and to the back of the file cabinet other things go way back, I have to children and a degree in Engineering and i have a hard time remembering simple things like algebra and when i last took a bath as opposed to a shower. My mind has only two things on it my wonderful children. Your not losing your intelligence it's there way back there.

It's a lot harder on kids these days too, especially in school. They learn in first grade what some of us learned in third or forth and so on. My confidence is in my children. I have moments, especially where I am forgetful where as I wasnt prior to having children. And theres the obvious -- drained. I would say though seriously it has made me more confident and more intelligent. I continue to learn things on a daily basis. Things to help my kids, family and myself. Mix and mesh the two and I feel much more wise and knowledgable. It's all what you make of it.

I find it very important to keep your mind active with things unrelated to children. Read books for adults. Get a part time job. Talk to other grown ups about grown up things on a regular basis. Read the news or at least something intellectually stimulating every day.

Nevertheless, I do find myself more forgetful and absentminded. I think it is due to the fact that raising children requires enormous ability for multitasking and sometimes things are bound to fall through the cracks.

Buck up!

It's undoubtedly the influence of: 1) hearing, "Mommy, mommy, mommy!" a thousand times every day; 2) having the kids ask perfectly reasonable questions that you couldn't possibly be expected to answer ("Why do they call them fish?"); or 3) hearing inane statements from parties not directly responsible for rearing your children ("Did you know you son's got his shoes on the wrong feet?")

I never had kids, but you sure have my support & sympathy; child-rearing is the MOST difficult job there is!

Remember: there is nothing wrong with your brain that two weeks in the Bahamas alone wouldn't cure! *big hugs*

OK your problem is that b-4 you were pregnant you thought you knew every thing but now that your baby is out and probably running around you notice that you really have no clue.... but kids do that to you!!!! and you learn more and more each day when you look at your child because you don't know every thing... motherhood is different and because you probably never had to go through motherhood you didn't know anything about it so be glad that your learning its actually good...

Ever since i got pregnant my knowledge has expanded dramatically, i know heaps about babys and pregnancy, Uni is really sinking in~ Maybe you need something other then being a 'mum' to keep your mind active.

When you become a mother, your priorities change. You may not be "in the know" like you were before. You'll catch up, don't worry.
