Would you want to know more about the person or prefer to shy away? Do you assume the person believes in a higher power?

Being one of those people, I can tell you. Though I find theology and metaphysics quite fascinating, no religious denomination I have ever studied seems to hold all the truths. Ergo, I suspend judgment on the religion and its teachings. Also, I will not endorse anything I cannot find to be undoubtedly "true." I cannot so easily invest my life into a religious denomination based on "faith." Yet, since I still question and search for truth (unlike, say, atheists) I feel I am still a spiritual person.

Being spiritual means "being of the spirit". Believing in a higher power. This is the premise of the 12 steps of AA, Al-anon, Alateen, Narcanon, NA and so on. It is a belief that there is a power greater than ourselves. This power can be a religious power like Jesus Christ or just a vague belief that a creator exists that created our world. There are other spiritual practices that include all kinds of things but don't necessarily have to do with religion. In religion there is many times a feeling of spiritually and then they go hand and hand. I hope I made sense.

It means that that person does not believe in following an organized religion, it's dogmas, rituals, and observances.

It can also mean that someone doesn't limit their spiritual seeking to the teachings of one religion or spiritual belief system.

I don't know why one would want to not know the person unless they are close minded and do not want to associate with someone who doesn't share their religious convictions.

As for a higher power you could assume that they believe in a force beyond their control however thei definition and your definition of a higher power will be drastically different.

I am spiritual and I'm not religious. I'm also an atheist. Being spiritual doesn't mean the person believes in a higher deity.

They probably don't prescribe to a certain religion, but believe in a "higher being". Why would you shy away? Personally, I think that the true religion is the one that allows other to believe in whatever they want.

I would take it to mean that the person believes in something...not necessarily a higher power, but something....I wouldn't shy away from them...beliefs are highly personal and unless they believe their purpose on earth is to kill me, it can stay personal.

Being religious is a bit narrower form of spirituality. One can be spiritual without being a religious person. Being religious is about following a laid down path (which ought to lead to being spiritual).
Spiritual persons are those who attempt to increase their levels of awareness much deeper, to be able to explore newer dimensions of life, reach the peaks of perception level much much beyond the sense organs and thus attempting to go beyond 'nature'.
Religious persons, are contented with placing their trust in a particular 'faith' and allow things to happen in its own 'natural' course.

They don't understand that spiritual is worse than religious, because religion at least has a basis; a set of beliefs to follow. The best description for someone on a path of growth is pragmatic, I think. Pragmatism.

"I'm pragmatic, not spiritual."

I think its because people don't understand that religion constantly is evolving similar to life and technology. When one religion has outgrew its applicability to the social laws of the time it was revealed it becomes corrupt in which case a new manefestation of God comes to reveal His progressive revelation. I think that people who are in that state just haven't found what works for them because they aren't informed of the present day Revelation which we as Baha'is believe is the Baha'i Faith.

well to me, to be spiritual means that you believe that there is a god and he is the creator, but spiritual to me means that you are non denominal in your religious preference. As in you can still believe in God and not be christian or catholic, etc. Religious means that you do follow these religions and their rituals and such.
