Technically and otherwise, cameo is a type of carving which dates back to ancient times. Typically a bas-relief figure is carved into one type of stone and this is set on another background stone of contrasting color. Also, banded agate is frequently carved with the figure in one color band and the background in another.

Although some featured Aphrodite with or without Eros, and sometimes with Diana, like some French cameos of the neoclassical period, the cameo did not originate as a tribute to Aphrodite. It simply emerged as a stone carving technique which was refined to an art/craft in ancient Greece.

Many cameos are offered for sale as "Wicca" pieces, probably because of the seller's knowledge of trends. You can find listings on e-bay sometimes for cameos which are attributed as Wicca.

No disrespect intended to Ophelia, and if I am misinformed about that part of the cameo's history, then I apologize. It would be an interesting bit of lore to learn about, and if anyone has anything to share please do.
