i have dealt w/ depression after the birth of my children and after my mothers death. I found that being busy helped, but being busy w/ a purpose helps the most. talking to someone close helps for support and seeking professional help. you have to make a choice....feel helpless and let your moods drive you into a deeper hole OR want to rid yourself of that helpless feeling and start to live again. peace and blessing 2 U

Remove the stuff that is making you depressed... whether it's an imbalance in brain chemicals, where perhaps medication is indicated (bite my @## Tom Cruise!!!), or an annoying situation... you need to rectify the problem. If it's a situation you are in or you just don't know what it is, it's best to get counseling. Sometimes talking it out can help you find ways to get out of, or take control of what is making you so depressed. Anyway, this is an over simplification and I'm sure someone give you a better answer. good luck.

Antidepressant medications work about 70% of the time, according to scientific studies. Certain types of psychotherapy have a similar success rate for mild to moderate depression. Many people can cure their own depression, especially of it is not severe, through exercise, good nutrition, support from family/friends, and just the passage of time. If it's bad enough that you can't function normally in school or work, you should get help from a professional. He or she can talk to you about the best treatment.

There is no "cure"

You can control the symptoms with any number of mood-altering "happy" pills, which may help, but will cause side effects that could ruin your sex life, make you spacey and weird or even make you want to kill yourself.

Some people think taking herbal remedies such as St John's Wort helps ease the depth of depression, but the quantities needed to have an effect on the mind also cause people to be overly sensitive to sunlight. (think dark glasses and long sleeves in summer...)

I've always found that the best mood elevator is a satisfying sexual encounter. (Side effects of which are already well-documented in the 'births' section of your local newspaper...)

Find the source; determine if there is a physical cause or not. Once you have that information, treat the depression. Whether that means therapy or medication is determined by you and your physician or psychiatrist/psychologist. Sometimes counseling alone can help; sometimes short term use of medication will turn you around; sometimes you have to face the reality that you might be on medication all your life. That is why it is important to find the source.

Depression is a treatable medical illness that falls under the category mood disorder. There are two different types of moods, high (happy, euphoric) and low moods (unhappy, sad). Bipolar means two poles or opposite extremes. Bipolar disorders then contain mood swings which fluctuate between high and low moods. In unipolar depression, the depression discussed in this site, we are looking at one pole, one mood. In unipolar depression, normally referred to as depression, we see a mental condition over a prolonged period of time characterized by feelings of sadness, hopelessness, inadequacy, low energy, guilt, worthlessness, appetite change, sleep change and loss of interest in life.

From my own experience, I usually play songs that lift my spirit up, open windows to see how nice it is outside and cook my favorite dish. You are to decide how to handle present situations that make you feel depressed. Try not to focus on yourself...... I also pray for some comfort from God.
Join in with your friends and do some outside activities.

There is no Cure for clinical depression. You can treat the symptoms of depression by increasing the serotonin in your brain. There are many vitamins that increase serotonin. I personally take a lot of b12 and an herb called holy basil. http://www.naturalhealthshoppe.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=356
