I was a new editor at a small Texas daily about a decade ago and I took to working nights very late. The building had a upstairs that I did not know was there because the door was hidden away at the top of a flight of stairs in the job-print shop in another room.
For night after night I neard creaking over my head but in the direction of the jobshop. I thought it was just the old building cooling from the heat of the day and the airconditioning still going inside where I was.
One night, I was at my computer and happened to look up and out my office door toward the back of the public area. Behind the counter about 2/3s of the way back in the room, I saw an old black man running. He was SO ODD though. I could only see him from the lower chest upward because of the counter and he seemed to be gliding instead of actually bouncing from his feet coming in contact with the floor. He was headed toward the door leading to the job shop.
What is so REALLY ODD is that his head seemed to a perfect sphere. REALLY!! And the light and shadows on him didn't seem right given the lighting in the public area. The highlights and shadow all seemed in the wrong places.
And while he was "running" there was no sound at all. None!!
AND HERE IS WHATI IS SO REALLY ODD. It didn't bother me at all. Despite all that strangeness, I feel he belonged there and was perhaps a press-room worker from the back room where the printing press is located.
A few weeks later the newspaper's owner and I were talking about some strange unsigned letters that were appearing around town in business' mail slots and he asked me if I had ever experienced anything odd while working late at night.
I said yes and explained.
He laughed quietly and told me I was not the first to see the ghost. It had appeared to his pressroom foreman one night in the back of the building "running" toward the front office area. The owner said that his foreman--a mature former military man built like a tank--never again worked late at night.
The owner then told me that when he had bought the newspaper he was exploring the odd staircase in the print shop that went upstairs, and found a sort of secret door to the side of the top landing. He forced it open and found a hidden room that had bolts of white cloth, a sewing machine, KKK badges and a membership roster book that he promptly took outside and burned since some of the names in it were still living at that time.
I believe that ghost was a victim who had been brought to the builiding and tried to escape but failed.
True story.

This didn't happen to me but to my best friend. When she was about 4 her familly moved into an apartment that was owned by a woman. It was a really nice apartment and they got it for really cheap. The woman was desperatly trying to sell it because her daughter had been killed in it and she didn't want to be there any more(this they found out later).
Well it happened one night that my friend (who was 4 at the time) woke up in the middle of the night and she was screaming and crying. Her mom ran into her room and picked her up and asked what was wrong once she calmed her down. My friend said, there was this woman in here and she was looking at me, she had blonde hair and she was tall. Her mom tought it was just a dream and said no don't worry it was a dream and etc. The next few weeks they found out about the girl's death and they saw pictures. It was to the description that my friend gave and my friend recognized her. Turns out the girl who had been killed was just watching my friend who was sleeping in her room. My friend says to this day she won't forget her, she says she looked like she was nice and didn't want to cause them any harm. Needles to say that they moved away preetty quickly after that.

This one happened to me, the apartment I live in was owned by a woman who had a heart attack and died in her sleep. I was sitting on my computer one day, which is turned away from my television. I had the news on so I could hear it while I worked. All of a sudden I heard footsteps and they sounded abnormaly close. But I didn't really give it much tought since I was alone and I live in an apartment building it could have been from upstairs. Well all of a sudden my tv starts flipping channels it turns on and off and then on again and it flipped the channels again, then turned off. I was pissing in my pants scared (not actually peeing). I called my sister and I told her to get home because it was one of the scariest things I've ever been through.....I have more but these are the shortest ones.

I don't have any stories myself but have you read Hans Holzier? He was sort of a ghost hunter in the 1950's and has a few really good collectons about his experiences. He's a little petulant, which makes him even more entertaining but his books are good.

Sure do, when I was about 10 , I realized what the older ones in my house knew, the house was haunted, but it wasn't one of those violent one, it would just let you know it was in the room, like, cut out a light or knock something over, once it even sat beside me on the bed. We even named him "Charlie" and tell him to stop and he would. When we moved, we were later told they used to see a light moving around in the house, but I don't know how true that part was. I just knew what I saw and heard was.

One night a few years back. I switch of the light to go to bed not long after I close my eyes, I felt like something was on top of me I open my eyes I could see like white sparkle light. It really scared me I had to sleep with the light on and the radio on for a few weeks after. I don't really know what it was.

I always had my doubts about ghosts and spirits and what not, until we moved into an apartment across the street from a cemetery. Which kind of creeped me out at night when you would come home but never really bothered me to much.
But suddenly weird things began to happen. The first and probably spookiest was my boyfriend and I were sitting on our bedroom floor middle of winter all windows closed no fans on watching T.V. and laughing, when all of a sudden the lid to this ceramic heart dish I had from a wedding shower literally flew across the room and landed right beside me. My boyfriend and I immediately quit laughing and the both of us just looked at each as enough to say did you just see what I just saw? I calmly picked the lid up and put it back on the dish and we continued to go about our business we actually never talked about it that night.
Then after that weird stuff would happen we had this lamp in the front room we'd shut it off before we went to bed and once we got in the room and laid down in bed (we slept with the door open) you would look down the hallway and the lamp would be on. One of us would go shut it off again and in the middle of the night or in the morning it would be on again, it got to the point that we would just leave the thing on at night.
Other silly things would happen such as silly stuff would disappear for days, weeks, months and suddenly reappear in silly spots typically right after you would get fed up of it not turning up and going to buy a new one. Silly stuff meaning our crushed red pepper, butter bowl lids, toothbrushes, combs, my camera that went missing for 4 mo. finally reappeared under my bed, for which I keep nothing under and looked there several times for it.
We finally moved only because they were turning the match boxes into condos and we weren't interested so we moved. To an apartment about 2-3 miles from where we were and weird things continued to happen there.
Mainly the same thing with silly stuff disappearing and reappearing later on. The light never shut on or off though we still had it, but our buzzer would just ring out of nowhere, we had the landlord check it out and he found no problems and no one else seemed to have any door bell problems.
The scariest thing that happened there was one day we were jamming our tunes, not to loud sitting at the kitchen table playing cards and suddenly the stereo volume began to get super loud the remote control was on this divider wall that was between the dinning room and front room neither one of us touched it so I jumped up and grabbed the controller as I was closest and tried to turn it down but couldn't so my bf ran over and started to turn the volume knob down and as he would get it turned down a few notches it would go right back up and at times it would keep going up as he was turning the knob to turn it down. That went on what seemed forever but was probably a minute or less when finally he just hit the power button. I guess you could say that was a technical error, but it was pretty damn creepy that's all I have to say. We did turn the radio back on and it never happened after that.
We have since moved and bought a house. I haven't noticed anything going missing our no weird things happening since we moved here two years ago. Though we pretty much chucked everything from the apartments and bought all new furniture. My girlfriend who gets off on this kind of crap says spirits can attach themselves to objects and you can bring them along with you on a move, so maybe we solved our problems when we did that.
Hey as long as knives aren't flying across the room at me, I don't mind you hunkering up with me, just don't stare at me when I'm naked, lol!
