That's a really personal decision. I had 2 kids and the first one (a boy) still wanted to breastfeed at 2 1/2 years. I limited it to once a day, at bedtime, because I didn't want to be taking away that time of bonding for him, but I also was getting to a point where I didn't want him to be that dependent on me throughout the day. After a year, it's really a psychological thing, not a physical health thing. After awhile, just a bedtime story and some cuddling was all that was needed. My second (a girl) just stopped having interest after about 15 months.
At 4, I would really have an exit strategy in place! He's not going to be able to have mommy whip out her breast at kindergarten, so for the sake of mom & son, they should be coming up with ways of continuing their emotional bond without needing mommy's breasts. You might, as a friend, suggest that she maybe would want to start thinking about other ways to maintain the close bond with her baby boy. (My baby boy is now a grown-up man, and we are still close emotionally, even though I cut off the "mother's milk express" before he hit age 3.)

In many countries the parent does not wean until the child is 4 1/2 yrs.
The world's average is 2 yrs.
Sadly in the U.S. the average is 3 months (no wonder we are falling behind)...
At any rate I wouldn't go for 4+ years but it is not uncommon sometimes. However if it persists much longer I would consider that wrong.

Wow 4 years old!! I couldn't imagine breastfeeding that long..me personally I don't think I would ever nurse that long..My daughter is almost 7 months old and is currently being weened but mostly because she wants to...most of the time she would rather have a bottle or sippy cup!! I am defiantly pro-breastfeeding but sorry I think breastfeeding pass a year is just creepy...when your child can talk and eat table food I think its time to stop nursing.

4 years is DEFINITELY way beyond the expiration date. My daughter is 4, I breastfed her the first year of her life. I feel that was ample time to give her a good head start. Six more months tops. But 4? Can he ride a bike yet? Yup, it's time to wean.

A 4 year old is eating meat. No child should be breast fed much past their first b-day, if even for that long. 4 year old breastfeeding is vulgar. Sorry.

Most doctors will tell you to breast feed for at least a year. Most women breast feed for six months to a year. I quit at six months because my son got his teeth. 4 is way too long but for some women they don't want to take the kid off the tit.

IF UR FRIENDS SON IS 4 YEARS OLD HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN OFF THE NINNE YEARS AGO. THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE. YOU SHOULD ONLY BREAST FEED FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS
