He drove Nigel not, to school, vacuumed up, mowed the lawn, cooked the dinner, washed up and put the girls to bed but he doesn't want sex because he feels I'm trying to reward him.and that's not why he did all those things.

his own response has your answer, if you would just hear it;
he does not want "thank-you" sex, he wants you to love and appreciate him. try doing something nice for him that involves time and effort....cook his favorite meal, make him a pie....wash his car.

How do you feel after a long day?? I know that sometimes after a long eventful day, that I am so tired and don't want to have sex.. Its possible he said what he did because he wants you to understand that "he doesn't expect sex from you" after you have had a long day..Maybe he was trying to make a point.. I think its just another perspective you should explore..

He might be trying to make a real effort and thinks that you feel you have to due to the effort he has made!
show him its not just another chore and it something to be enjoyed!
