I am so sorry about your experience. I was raised a baptist in a baptist church, but I was not a real christian until I was 18. The Bible teaches that a true church, baptist or any other kind that truly wants to follow Jesus must have certain things. This is not a complete list but I hope it will help youwill be helpful.
1) A biblical understanding of the gospel and a love for the gospel
2) Teaching and preaching the whole Bible, not just the parts that are easy to accept.
3) Biblical understanding and practice of following Christ
4) Biblical love for others
Maybe you and your kids feel very uncomfortable being told about hell, but Jesus never denied hell. He doesn't want you or me or anyone to go to hell. However, God is just and must punish sin. The problem is we sin many times every day. This offends and saddens God. "The wages of sin is death". We have earned death by our sins. "But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus". Jesus has provided the way out. The gospel is this. Jesus loves you!!! Jesus died on the cross to take the sin and penalty of sin (hell and judgment) of anyone who trusts and depends on Him. He died in your place. He took your penalty which you owe. He loves you! Tell this to your kids. Tell it to the baptist church which only explained half the story. We have a choice as people. We can keep walking in sin against God or we can turn away from those bad things and trust Jesus personally as our Savior by asking Him to "have mercy on me a sinner". I did this when I was 18 and my life has been changed for the better ever since. It has not been easier or easy just much better. Then after you have personally trusted Christ, read the gospel of John and Romans prayerfully. God Bless you! May God help you and your family find a good balanced church filled with God's grace and truth.

No matter what church you go too, you will find some people that will hurt others. It seems like your worse hurts come from your church family. Maybe you need to visit other churches until you find the right one for you and your family. I went to a Baptist church for over 30 years and I am now in a Non-denominatinal church where you can feel the presence of God. Don't settle for no less. If the church is dead, move on.

There are right ways and wrong ways to tell people things, especially children but what needs to be communicated is the truth. The truth is, if you accept the Bible as truth, that if anyone does not know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior they are going to end up in hell. Do you love your children? Don't you want them to know the truth? Don't you want them to have a home in heaven for eternity? Then they need to be told.
However, there are ways to tell children things like that without offending anyone and some churches are just too blunt. I sympathize with your situation but still believe the message of the Bible needs to be told and the younger, the better.

Unfortunately, the Church is made up of sinners, and we need to keep our eyes on Jesus and not people.
I would try other churches until you find one that is on fire for Jesus. A good clue is if they tell you right away that Jesus has followers in many other churches and that this church is just a part of Christ's body of believers.
Don't give up. God will reward those who diligently seek after him. If you don't give up, you will find a place where God is lifted up.
I myself, have been going to an Assembly of God Church for 27 years. They are on fire for Jesus. But there are many good Bible believing churches that would be just fine.
God bless you.

I am a Southern Baptist, however, I don't go to church for that same reason. My mother was a Southern Baptist also. She now goes to a Non-Denominational church. So, try that. She goes to a Fellowship Church, and they are real nice and help out lots of people and go on missions to other countries. They accept anyone in thier church and do not "put-down" other denominations. I have been many times myself.

In the early church, there were no new testament books. The thought hadn't even occurred to anyone to write anything down yet (Jesus commanded the apostles to preach and teach, etc., but he never asked them to write). So, in the early church, all we have is THE CHURCH, and no writings. In fact , there would be none for decades.
What Christ established was a CHURCH, not a BOOK. He chose the apostles to be the earthly leaders of the Church. He gave them his own authority to teach and to govern. Jesus gave Peter special authority among the apostles (John 21:15–17) and signified this by changing his name from Simon to Peter, which means "rock" (John 1:42). He said Peter was to be the rock on which he would build his Church (Matt. 16:18).
Later, as writings started to appear in the church, many of them were read often along with the old testament and revered as being sacred. However, many suspect books came into play. Just look at this list of early Gospels:
1-4. The Canonical Gospels.
5. The Gospel according to the Hebrews.
6. The Gospel of Peter.
7. The Gospel according to the Egyptians
8. The Gospel of Matthias.
9. The Gospel of Philip.
10. The Gospel of Thomas.
11. The Proto-Evangelium of James.
12. The Gospel of Nicodemus (Acta Pilati).
13.The Gospel of the Twelve Apostles.
14.The Gospel of Basilides.
15.The Gospel of Valentinus.
16.The Gospel of Marcion.
17.The Gospel of Eve.
18.The Gospel of Judas.
19.The writing Genna Marias.
20.The Gospel Teleioseos.
And that's only the gospels. Other books that were revered among the early church included the Didache (Teaching of the Apostles), The Shepherd of Hermas, The Protoevangelium of James, The Epistles of Pope Saint Clement, and many others.
It was at the councils of Hippo and Carthage, in the late fourth century, that the successors to the apostles (the bishops, headed then by Pope Saint Siricius) determined which books were inspired and which were not, thus giving us the Bible.
They had the authority to do this because Christ told the apostles (and their successors) that anything they bound on earth would be bound in Heaven and that he would send his Spirit to guide them into "all truth". He also promised his eternal protection to his church stating that the gates of Hell would never prevail against her, even to the end of time.
That church was protected by God in the first century as well as the fourth. She was prevented from teaching error (because of the promised guidance of the Spirit) in the seventh, eleventh, fifteenth and twentieth centuries, as well.
The Bible itself teaches that no man is allowed to interpret it for himself (outside of the Church). It also commands that we follow ALL her teachings, whether they be oral or written (2 Thess. 2:15).
The teaching authority (Magisterium) of the Church is the same today as it was 2000 years ago.
You can start discovering the historic truth here: http://www.catholic.com/library/pillar.a...
And in the library here: http://www.catholic.com/default.asp...
When someone tells you something that conflicts with Church teaching, you can read what the early church Fathers (those who learned their religion at the feet of the apostles) taught here: http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/...
