My parents used to serve Highballs to company in the 1970's. The men drank beer, and the ladies drank Highballs.
A Highball was a shot of what ever cheap whiskey was in the cabinet, and Crystal Club 50-50 (lemon-lime) soda. If there was no 50-50, they used ginger ale.
My father used to buy a case of one-quart returnable bottles of soda. At the store, you were able to mix and match. He'd get a case of mainly 50-50 and ginger ale, one bottle of orange, one bottle of Crystal Club Birchola (birch beer), and one bottle of cream soda. After we finished the orange, cream, and birch beer, we were left with ginger ale and 50-50, which wasn't that appealing as a kid. We'd finish one case before he bought a new case. I asked my dad, why he didn't get more orange, etc. He said he wanted to have the ginger ale and 50-50 on hand to make High Balls for company.
