I am thinking about purchasing a sewing machine that can do almost everything and want to know if there is a specific brand that I should be looking for.

I was in your shoes quite a few years back. You want one that will last you forever.

I bought a brother 8500 - It was second from the top of the line when I bought it. It is a combo embroidery/sewing machine. It has the most embroidery designs that I could find, although now you can easily switch them from format to format. It is over 6 years old and still runs great, especially after some majorly massive embroidery projects. The only repair I've ever needed is from overtightening the needle.

Definitely check out brother for this type of machine. Their new ones can embroider entire backs of jackets, and have a machine for all price ranges.

I have been using Singer machines from almost times immemorial and have found them quite versatile. You can try it.
