Flowers are different colours to attract different insects to them. Many insects such as bees see in ultraviolet light, which we can't see. This means that they see flowers in different ways from us, making them stand out so that they can find them easily amongst the other plants.

Also people have taken the flowers that occur naturally in the wild and then through selecting the brightest ones, made them into more colours and varieties for gardens.

The color characteristics are part of what is in the genetic code, the DNA of the plant. It is a blueprint that tells each living thing what it will grow into. Part of the pattern in the genes, describes what kind of plant, and what colors, it will make.

let me see...

Certain plants reflect certain wavelengths in the light spectrum for their own specific reason...attract insects, control the amount of sunlight(for tempature control) etc.

for example when we see the green leaves of a tree, the tree is not absorbing the green wavelengths... thus reflecting it and looking green...and a red rose is reflecting the red wavelenths and so on...

I think this is what I remember from botany...hope I did not confuse you... cause I'm kinda confused meself...ha-ha

However hope it helped a little...
