Okay, yesterday my 1yr 3mo old local dog gave birth to 4 healthy puppies. It all went okay and my dog was nursing her new puppies with no problems at all until...

this morning, my dog is acting weird, she won't nurse the puppies anymore and she tries to eat the puppies! I was so dead shocked to see when my dog tried to nibble one of the puppy's head, I took the puppy away and my dog almost bit me!

My dog is acting weird, her eyes looks sharp.
I offered her food and water but she won't eat or drink.

I have to separate the puppies, now what?
How do I feed the puppies?
Is it alright to give them a milk formula of some sort?

Does that mean my dog doesn't want her puppies?
This is her first prego.

Thanks for all your help.

Sounds like your puppy wasn't ready to be a mommy yet. One year and three months is too young. Two years is the earliest recommended age for breeding a *****. She is exhibiting the expected behavior of a dog that is too young to breed.

Call the vet when they open Monday. Ask them what they recommend for feeding. Until then, call a pet shop or kennel and ask them if they can give you instructions. If you can't find any help between now and then, baby formula will have to do. You will have to feed them at least every couple of hours. And keep the young mom away from the puppies unless you are close enough to intervene. She needs to be closely watched around her pups. You will have to watch her and her pups 24/7.

Not all dogs are good mothers,go and get a proper milk re placer or take the dog and pups to a vet asap.you will need help to feed the pups and to make sure you do not get the milk into their lungs but there definitely is something going on ,possibly some placenta was left in the mother and there is a medical reason for her behavior but you need real advice from a vet ASAP or you will lose the pups and possibly have a very sick mom on your hands. This is why it is such a huge responsibility to breed.

Why did you breed her?? YOu clearly have very little knowledge about dog breeding and puppy rearing.
You need to get puppy milk replacer, called Esbilac, at a pet supply store and feed the around the clock, every 2-4 hours. And you will need to stimulate them to eliminate.
Maybe you better get on the web and do some research.
The female should be SPAYED ASAP, so she does not have anymore.
This is why breeding should be left to the people who know what they are doing. We are ALWAYS prepared for this in case it happens.

Call your vet ASAP!

A sudden change in a pet's behavior can indicate a serious illness or life-threatening condition. You wrote that she won't eat or drink now. That concerns me, too. She may be in pain or have an infection.

The puppies will need a canine milk replacement formula, stimulation to urinate and defecate, and kept warm. DO NOT USE A HEATING PAD, HEATING BLANKET OR A LIGHT SOURCE.

When you call your vet, they will also tell you how to take care of the pups.

Go to the vet right away your dog could have caught something and gotten sick. Your vet can also tell you how to feed the puppies. I have heard of dogs not wanting their pups but they never acted like THAT they just ignored them. I think your dog might be sick have the puppies checked out too, just in case they picked it up.

This is common in several breeds, including Dobermans (I use to breed them) Your mom dog has a condition of hormone imbalance much like postpartum depression in Humans, and she isn't really responsible for her actions right now...You will have to feed the pups. you can try to give them to her in 3 days, but if she acts the same, don't try again...However, she might calm down enough for you to hold er on her side so that the pups can nurse, and then take them away again..
I will post good hand rearing sites in just a minute..Here is one> http://petandwildlife.tripod.com/carla/hand.html

If you can't get the puppy milk replacer tonight, your grocer will have goat milk, either canned or fresh. I don't know your dog's size, but if it a medium sized breed, you can use the newborn sized Nuk nipple, also at your grocers../So, until you can get to the vets office to get the formula, or a good pet supply, you can feed straight goats milk (fresh in dairy fridge, and warmed) with 1 Tablespoon of plain yogurt per cup of milk..or canned goat milk...dilute 1 can of milk, with 2/3 can of boiled water.... Add 2 Tablespoons of plain yogurt , feed warm..If your dog is a toy breed, you can call emergency vet clinics to ask if they have the correct nipples and bottles. Be sure to keep them warm with a heating pad or such, and feed every 2-3 hours..rub their bottoms with a damp warm paper towel to help them poop...this is important, as they will become ill if not aided in moving their bowels.
If you have further questions after reading the links, just email me from my profile.

Be sure to call your vet in the morning. My vet was able to keep one of my moms calm with medication.

Torbaynewfs took the words right out of my mouth. Look at that person's post.

A dog that young shouldn't be having puppies.

She is definitely too young to have pups.
If you want to save the pups, get milk replacement at the pet store and a bottle. You will need to wipe the pups bottoms to stimulate them to got to the bathroom . You will need to bottle feed them every two hours around the clock.
Good Luck!
