720p is preferred for fast-moving pictures such as sports programs. Interlacing produces artifacts, and when successive fields are not similar to each other, you are seeing only 540 lines in a 1080i picture. If the picture changes slowly from field to field, 1080i will show higher resolution. Even TVs that display 1080p will show some interlace artifacts because the "de-interlacing" is not perfect. This is why some networks that rely heavily on sports programming opted for 720p. That being said, in most cases de-interlaced 1080i is very good and is superior to 720p

I have been reading HDTV magazines over the year... u can find out which is actually better by calculating the exact pixels both of them have. This is the way:
1080i = 1920 x 1080 x 25* = 52 million pixels
720p = 1280 x 720 x 50** = 46 million pixels
*1/25 second is the time taken for interlaced piture to scan its top+bottom fields
**1/50 second is the time taken for progressive scan picture to scan both fields
Conculsion - at a time, 52million pixels and 46million pixels of details are displayed on a 1080i and 720p respectively. Although 720p loses out 6million pixels of details, but because of its Progressive Scan, movements/motion on 720p are displayed more naturally. U can say that 1080i will only be better than 720p if a still image is being displayed. =)

Most video professionals agree that 720p is a superior broadcast format (because of the "progressive" aspects). Even Mark Cuban who owns HDNet says he's broadcasting in 1080i only because of PERCEPTION a bigger number is better. There are newer display devices coming on the market that will be capable of showing 1080p. However, viewing distance is also a main determining factor is whether or not the resolution difference is perceptable. If you're sitting 12 or more feet back from a picture that's 60" or less, you ain't gonna be able to tell the difference.

progressive is easier to rescue if there's a crash, but interlaced is faster access.
