I always thought it was the flea or ticks, however i have tried just about everything from bath products to medications. he began shedding little bits of hair around the house i notice this when i am sweeping and so i took him to the groomer to get him trimmed. This is when we noticed the entire surface of his skin is iritated and flaky, and around his tail is extremly irritated i have used oatmeal shampoo, can i get some suggetions also he carries a fowl odor eve after he has just taken a bath what can be done about this please and thank you

The foul smell indicates infection. All the scratching has damaged the skin and bacteria have entered. The tail area is the favorite for fleabite dermatitis. This is an allergic reaction to the bite of fleas.

A vet trip is in order here. You will get some antibiotics, probably cortisone and please buy some Frontline Plus. I would recommend an antibacterial shampoo and bathe the dog frequently.

Changing the diet helps here also. No food containing corn, wheat or soy. Adding flax seed oil to the diet also helps.

ps - spray your house & yard for fleas

I have a dog that has the same thing. Ask your vet for some Prednisone. It will stop the ichy skin and without the constant irritation, the skin will return to normal.

This is indeed a medical condition that will not be helped by bathing. If your current vet has no good answer, change vets. Meanwhile, stop bathing him.(the dog, not the vet!) Please try to avoid predisone and similar meds. because they can cause other problems. Please go to a health web site and check up on prednisone and its effects on humans. I took my dog off that med because it made her hyper, wild, almost crazy, and it can lead to other physical problems. Good luck.

Yes seek medical help there is definitely a secondary bacterial infection and it could be caused by many things like a thyroid problem or seasonal allergies etc.Best bet is your vet.

You won't be able to stop the itch until you determine the cause. You won't get that answer here. Take him to a vet and follow his/her recommendations for treatment.

i THINK IF YOUR VET DOESN'T KNOW IT IS TIME TO FIND A NEW ONE . TRY GIVIN HIM SOME BUTTER 2X A WEEK. HIS DIET MAY BE WRONG OR IT CAN BE ALLERGIES OR HIS NERVES. LAY OFF ALL THE SHANPOOING U MIGHT BE DRYING IT OUT HIS SKIN....TRY THE BUTTER FIRST LIKE A TEASPOON. HE JUST MIGHT NEED SOME ADDED FAT TO HIS DIET. GOOD LUCK

i've had a dog that had that problem. we took him to the vet and they gave him a collar that i guessed dispensed medication throughout his body. he got better fast and all his hair grew back.
