The same goes for me on my fairly new PC. You could buy Word but your PC probably came with a Works program which has a word processor. You can save any document that you produce there as a word document (as opposed to RTF) just as if you were using Word.

Word / Excel / Outlook & Powerpoint all form Microsoft Office which is a separate package from Microsoft Windows. Therefore, unless Dell stated that Microsoft Office was included with the computer, you will have to buy the software.
If you can proove that the software is for a full time student or a teacher it should be possible to get the 'Students & Teachers' version for a fraction of the full price.

Wordpad files are rich text files. You can convert them to plain text files. Those are very basic documents, but are more widely accepted than RTF. Notepad is the plain text editor.
You can also go to the Microsoft website and download viewers...they do exactly what they say. They allow you to VIEW files without needing the full program. You can't use them to edit files. You can get a powerpoint viewer, Word viewer, etc.
I have a Dell that I bought three years ago. It came with many programs pre-loaded. However, I've noticed that recently about the only thing a Dell comes with is the OS.

Hi Laura. Here are several legal options.
If your resume is saved WordPad, make sure it is saved as RTF, or Rich Text Format; many programs recognize this format.
You can download new beta edition of Office 2007 from here. http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/beta/getthebeta.mspx
Usually Dell computers ship with a trial of WordPerfect Suite. If it's on your computer, use WordPerfect. When you launch the program it gives you the option to use MS Word mode and you can also save your documents in Word format.
If you are a student, there are significant price reductions on MS Office student edition.
Open Office is also a great Office Suite and its free. It opens MS Office docs and you can save your docs to be compatible when MS Office users open your files. It has its own version of PowerPoint etc. Get it here. http://www.openoffice.org/

Hi Laura,
In order to have Microsoft word, excel and powerpoint you would have to buy them...but if you go to
http://www.openoffice.org
It has a free program that you can download that will allow you to open and create and change files that are sent to you in word, powerpoint or excel. They have different names....but it is compatable and free. Also this program has a wonderful button that lets you save the file as a .pdf so that ANYONE can open them using Adobe Acrobat reader (free program works on Mac and PC).

Buying a computer is a lot like buying a new car. They advertise a low,low price as a come-on and then there are all these add-ons. For the newbie this is daunting--What should I get/What do I need? (Oh, a gas pedal to make it go will be an extra $$$$).
Don't be afraid to ask and sit down with someone besides a salesperson; the buyer definitely needs to pre-plan as to exactly what he/she wants to use the computer for and even what future plans you may have for it (e.g., burning CDs).

Can't help with powerpoint, but saving the document as an RTF file (rich text format) allows a lot of programs, including Word, to open it.

Since you just bought this laptop - from some store I presume, it doesn't have any version of MS Office on it. If you're savvy on the internet you can get a free copy from torrent sites - if not, you'll have to buy a copy or *cough *cough ask a friend for one.
