Self defence is common sense.

First thing, always make sure there is someone who knows where you are at all times.

If you dont like to look of a place, dont go there.

Try not to attract anyone attention.

Never text on a phone, always make voice calls. While you are texting, you are looking downwards and concentrating on a small device but if you are phoning someone your head is up and so you have a wider view.

If you are being attacked, never shout "help". People will just think you are messing about.... make strange noises that will pique people nosiness.

Run away from you attacker if at all possible.

If your attacker comes at you from the front, push him away by placing a finger or two right at the bottom of this throat (just above the top of your sternum, try it on your self *gently* you will find the spot) and push HARD, your attacker WILL stumble back several paces giving you time to run.

Now, concering which is the best form of self defence.....

It depends on what suits your body and mind. Although, personally i'd avoid judo for self defence, as someone already has to have hold of you for you to use a technique on him. Also avoid these occasional self defence courses, you can learn something in an hour, but an hour later it will have dissappeared from your memory making it useless. Try a striking form, such as karate, taekwondo, etc, etc.

My personal preference is taekwondo, as that martial art picks the best techniques from all of the other martial arts and has a very varied sylabus.

One last point, be aware that no martial art or self defence course will make you invunerable and it must be practiced over and over and over again.

Good luck for your future.

I've been lurking the boards of Bullshido.net for a while. These guys are people who have been in actual fights before or are involved in the MMA scene and such. Apperently, Muay Thai and BJJ are the two best martial arts. Judo is the second best if you can't take BJJ. All the other ones, especially Korean and Chinese martial arts, seem to be frowned upon by them for being ineffective in a real fight or for self defense. Aikido and Hapkido is also a really bad choice it seems. Everyone there complains that they are useless.

It makes sense though, since BJJ/Judo and MT are used in fighting tournaments such as UFC and Pride. So those two styles have had some real fight experience. However, I think these styles are full contact so you might wanna be careful about that.

In my opinion, Kyokushin karate seems like the best to me. But, there's not many places to learn this style unless you live somewhere like New York. If I had a choice I would go with Kyokushin and Judo or BJJ. From what I've seen, learning a combination of striking and graplling arts is the best choice.

You might want to take a look at Bullshido.net. These guy's have helped me realize what styles work and what fighting styles are just for show. They also help people stay away from "McDojos" which are basically dojos that scam people and teach them nothing.

If you want to do self defense then martial arts are no help unless they do pressure testing and reality training. When you enter a streetfight situation you get adrenalin dump. You can do all the training you want but if you are not prepared for the adrenalin dump then you won't stand a chance.

Who do you think would come out on top if a martial arts experts with no experience of adrenalin dump went into a street fight with a hardcore football hooligan? It would be the hooligan.

This is not to decry martial arts training because it does keep you healthy and some training is better than none at all but if you are purely looking at "self defense" then you need a class which tries to recreate, as much as possible, a street fight situation. When you do you will realise that many martial arts techniques do not work well in the street. Most street fights are won or lost in the first few seconds and also end up on the floor. You can also avoid confrontations in the streets with some common sense and work on body language.

Check out http://www.selfdefencefederation.co.uk/ and in particular the things Dave Turton has to say.

If violence is coming - don't be there - be elsewhere If attacked - move out of the way Train as if you were training for real - don't play or hobby train 1 Oz. of training is better than "thinking" you can handle yourself Remember the 3 - 2 - 1 rule: 3 feet outside your reach - keep the attacker here. 2 feet outside your reach - get back to 3 feet 1 foot away from you attack first so you can go home safely There are not systems or styles in real self defense...just you and the opponent (opponents) attacking you. What you do is up to you and the results is always your responsibility. Win or Lose is not thought of action but the result...during the action concentrate fully on the task at hand ... which is to go home safely!

Maybe you should go to the different classes and make up your mind after sitting through a class.
If you start off thinking that you want to learn just so that you can teach someone a lesson, I don't think you should go. It's not a good attitude to have.

When you learn a martial art you are deemed to know what you are doing and if you hurt anyone you could find yourself in a lot more trouble than if you knew nothing.

KRAV MAGA! i've tried muay thai (awesome), kali stick fighting (exhilirating), tae kwon do, and a eensy weensy bit of judo. If your goal is to really kick ***, Krav maga will do the trick. That middle eastern sport is used by their military. It can be really rough, but it will do the trick. It's dirty, but will teach that perv a lesson!

All martial arts are great. But what I noticed about some like Karate, Tae Kwondo, and some others...when you practice, you hit the air. In Muay Thai you really hit the bag and spar. Also in judo, you grapple people on the ground. I don't know about many street fights that NEVER end up on the ground somehow.

Good luck future a** kicker! =)

The best defence is an alert mind, be aware of what is going on around you and don't let yourself get into a situation where you are having to try and fight.

Most people aren't violent if you are civilised to them.

Just be nice and polite to people.(men and women) If you do that you won't even need the following ideas

1. Scream as loud as you can

2. A Cellphone/Mobile Phone with emergency dial.

3. Really long nails to the face comes a third.

4. If he really is a pervent and you are a good kicker you know where to aim at. (last resort)

hope that helped.
