A lot of people say Thailand. But I think there are options out there which haven't been widely explored yet. If it has to be an Asian country, why not try mainland China? It is a consumer's paradise, with a rich and mature history, and superb internal stability and security. Crime-wise, it is far safer than all other Asian alternatives, and cities like Shanghai are wonderful. If it need not be Asia, you will find that there are rewarding experiences in the former Soviet nations - especially Mongolia and the Baltics are beautiful and full of surprises. Yet another option people tend not to see is Turkey. And then there are Western nations with surprisingly low costs of living; among the best are Uruguay, Greece, Spain, and Chile. Oh, and how could I forget - I don't know where you're writing from, but New Zealand is dirt cheap in comparison with the UK and the US. I know because it's where I live. Consider this: Average cost of a house: US$ 90.000; one year of car insurance for an S-Class Mercedes: US$ 100; a princely restaurant meal for two with wine: US$ 30. And they speak English, and no funny stuff. Hope to have inspired a bit... good luck to you. You're on an exciting quest.

Thailand is Good, as is the Philippines as is Cambodia perhaps. However, you'll need to think about more than money, you need to consider the quality of life you'll have. Thai's are very racist and don't like foreigners much (they tolerate them but will never consider you as a real Thai).

Consider the availability and cost of Medical treatment. If you're retiring you're obviously getting older and will need some care. Thai private hospitals are excellent - but they cost money.

I would think about The Philippines. Perhaps a lower cost of living, people are friendly and almost everyone speaks English.

You'll need to do a LOT more homework and I'd suggest a visit to both countries to check them out.

I recommend the Philippines since the prices are still low and people are friendly to elders. They respect so much their elders.

The environment is great. Lots of green and shopping malls.
