Passports and visas are different.
People told you that some countries don't require passports. However, it is highly recommended to carry your passport when you travel anywhere, even Canada.
A tourist visa is required by some countries like China and India. Very few places require them, but it depends on where you are from and where you are going. Contact the individual embassy if you have concerns.

The caribean islands use to allow no passports but I believe that in 2007 in effect you must have one , definatly by the end of this year. I believe this might be due to World Terriorism. Good Luck if your travelling its always alot of fun.
