Would you trust a teacher or any other kind of professional who comes in contact with your child? There are a lot of sex scandals with teachers and you leave your child with a teacher ALL DAY LONG five days a week. But most people only see a priest for one hour each Sunday and the parents are with the child for that hour.

In America (mostly in the Boston area), about 10% of clergy have been ACCUSED (not all proven guilty), and less than 2% out of all the clergy in the world were ever accused of sex abuse.

If you are focusing all of your fear on priests, then your child will most likely get molested by a neighbor, relative, friend, or some other kind of professional who comes in contact with your child.

Why don't you take a look at the FBI's most wanted for child molesters and see what kind of professions they have? I'll save you the time. The answer is that all professions in society have child molesters, and some child molesters don't have any profession at all. For all I know, you could be a child molester.

Here are the statistics:
1) Less than 2% of all clergy have ever been accused of sexual abuse

2) Of that tiny percentage, 81% of the accused are admitted homosexuals who are accused of having sex with young men or teen aged boys (not prepubescent). This is why the Pope has taken action to reaffirm Church policy that someone with strong homosexual tendencies should not go into the priesthood.

3) Your kids are most likely to get molested by a relative, close friend, neighbor, or by another child.

"...Statistics concerning child sexual abuse: 29 percent will take place by a relative; 60 percent will be by a person trusted by the parent and known to the child, and 11 percent will be committed by a stranger." -CS&T

If I had an eleven-year-old son, I wouldn't trust any adult male to spend time alone with him.

I had an opportunity to spend about nine months monitoring a two year sex offender's court ordered type of therapy class for first time offenders and offenders who are on parole.

Those people were your average normal people. They almost always messed with their family members It was always a trusted member of the family, community. One was a minister, but not a priest. It made me frightened for every little girl in the world. Almost all of these guys were married Even the ones that were there for male/male offenses considered themselves heterosexual. All but two of them were there because of messing with a family member. All but 5 of them considered themselves practicing christians and attended church at least occasionally. Baptists, Methodists, Evangelical, a couple of Catholics, Agnostics, an Atheist and a couple who wouldn't discuss their religious beliefs.

People, there is NO REASON TO ALLOW YOUR CHILDREN... MALE OR FEMALE... TO SPEND TIME WITH ADULT MALES IN YOUR FAMILY AND GROUP OF FRIENDS.

NO REASON. As a parent YOU should supervise what ever is going on when your child is spending time with relatives.

Another note on that class... More than half of them were grandfathers. Just a warning.

Yes I would with my Priest but then I know him and I have spoken to my children about such matters long ago. less than 1% of priests are accused the rate is greater than 14% so I would definitely trust him before you or a school teacher.

Would you trust a 17 year old alone in your home for a week while you go on vacation? Or a dog off leash in Petco? Depends on the personality...

No, or my daughter. Or my wife. Or my pet.
But I have to say, it would be a terrible situation going on, for me to have to leave my family in that situation alone, without me.

It's here in New Mexico, where the Church sends the problem priests for rehab. We've got'm here.

Yes. The majority of priests are sincere men devoted to God and their parishioners and would NEVER harm a child.

Having said that, I would monitor my child's activities and acquaintances no matter who or what they were and would use my better judgment and gut feeling to decide what I would allow them to do and with whom.

I don't hold a whole group of people accountable for the actions of a few. But I would not leave my son alone with any man I don't know well.
