Each person has their own opinions about this including the scientifically proven theories. We keep our tv on pretty much constantly. My son (3 yrs) has learned some spanish from Dora, counting and colors from blues clues and numerous other learning info. I think its a wonderful tool to use and he still gets fresh air and attention from me. I dont feel that tv can have a negative effect unless you are using it as a babysitter, and not paying the child any mind. Use your own head, and dont let others influence yourself.

I keep our TV running a lot of the time too, it's like background noise, and should the kids stop and take a break from playing, they might catch something useful. As long as he really isn't watching it a lot, I wouldn't think there's a problem, but consider turning it off and turning the radio on, or just some silence, kids need quiet sometimes, too, besides when their sleeping, I mean. But at 16 months, he shouldn't be watching more than a half hour to and hour of TV a day, so be sure he's not really watching.

I think it's always a good idea to limit TV watching, even if what they are watching is educational. If they sit in front of the TV for several hours a day, then they are not being active...though they may know everything about WWII and how to read and write before they are old enough to go to school. From the sound of your question, your son isn't watching TV too much at all...make sure, though, that you limit to just a few hours a day and not all at one time...also, when he is not watching, have him doing some physical activity (on a rainy, hot, or cold day you could have him help you with household chores).

Experts say that the tv makes childrens minds work at a rapid pace which can make problems when your child goes to school. At school children are required to sit still and not have such rapid thoughts but long thoughtful ones. Some say that too much TV can cause ADD.
In the study of more than 2,000 children, Christakis found that for every hour watched at age one and age three, the children had almost a ten percent higher chance of developing attention problems that could be diagnosed as ADHD by age 7. A toddler watching three hours of infant television daily had nearly a 30 percent higher chance of having attention problems in school.

No a lot of TV programs for young kids play a key role in development. Maybe try asking a psychologist maybe or if your pretty computer savvy look up some sites about childhood development.
Just common sense, but for the most part I can't help you. ;-D i'm not a mother, so mayber your maternal instincts will win this one.

I just love how some parents allow t.v. to teach their child because they're too lazy to do it themselves.
