Amber,
I have never heard of keeping a cat in a cage for that length of time unless traveling was involved. I suggest that you try putting your cat in a cage or large pet carrier for short periods at a time to see how your cat reacts to this sort of treatment. I would think that some animals might not like being caged up for that long of a period of time, but the only way you can find out is to test it. I have 8 cats and I think they would go nuts if they were caged at all, and then you also have to have room for a litterbox. And remember if you cage your animal up they may take to howling rather loudly, this in itself may cause you problems with the other the other dorm members. My cats are independent creatures and I dont think that they would be comfortable in a cage and I wouldnt feel comfortable about it either. Also if there were an emergency situation such as a fire your cat would be trapped.

I think it would be very cruel to your cat to put it in a cage but also having it in your dorms is not ideal. If the cat can stay with your parents (if that is where you are currently staying) then rather leave it with them. You won't only be out of the dorm for those times, you'll be going out etc. What if you get delayed and no one is there to let the cat out? Only take the cat to your dorm i their is no other option but if that is the case i say get another roommate!

Cats don't tend to appreciate being locked in anything...a cage, a small room....they get a bit temperamental. Unless of course you don't mind your belongings being peed on because pussy poo decided to act out.
Best bet, if your kitty is happy at home, than leave it there. Honestly, you would probably end up being away for more than just the four hours with study groups, extra hours in the library, going out with friends etc. And if roomie isn't too thrilled now, now only will kitty be unhappy, but it may create some discomfort between you and your roomie.

I don't recomment placing him into a cage. He will feel that he is just a guest. (instead of a memeber of the family)
Just secure a corner of the room by blocking it off with a mesh pet fence. Be sure he has his litterbox, food, water, and plenty of his favorite toys.
Remember, Cats aren't Dogs. If you leave a cat home alone, he's probably going to spend more time in his favorite spot, grooming himself - rather than tampering with items that he knows are not his own. Just make sure he has his own toys to jump on and shred, and... kill. Isolating him from the rest of the dorm really isn't necessary. :]
Take em'

He would probably be fine in a large cage while you're gone, but he's probably going to cry and drive your roomate nuts. Do they even let cats in your dorm? I've never heard of any dorm allowing big pets like that.

If your roomate wants you to take the cat, it will not hurt the cat. I have 2 dogs and they are locked in a cage from 7 am.-4 pm.

placing a cat in a cage isn't cruel or harmful. If a dog would be left alone for that long then it would be angry with you but cats are totaly different they would still love you if you put her/him in a cage for 4 hours for two days. so Good Luck!!

Get a large cage and it own water dish, food dish, and litterbox. It will be fine in a cage for a few hours. Make sure you give it some extra attention when you get beck.

Maybe get a BIG cage, so it has room. Make sure it has water and something to sleep on. It isnt cruel, just make sure you have it go to the bathroom before you leave and when you get home. give it lots of attention !!
