he was on a chain to a dog house and left there for 21/2 years.(he is 3) i have been able to rehabilitate him in every way except for aggression toward cats and other male dogs. Any ideas? I DO NOT BELIEVE in shock collars!!! Or anything else inhumane.

i am a dog trainer- the usual methods don't seem to be working. i don't just give up on an animal like a large percentage of our nation does.

Is he neutered?
Check out "The Dog Whisperer" on National Geographic. He has some really good ideas. I'm glad to hear you rescued the dog, we need more people to care about more than themselves. You haven't described in what way he is agressive? Does he want to kill them, or is he keeping them away from you? Does he think he's protecting you?
If you have no experience with agressive dogs, seek a professional to help you, and I agree you don't need a shock collar. You don't want to punish him, you want to train him to ignore them.

If you live in a state where there's an ASPCA or PETCO take the dog there for agression classes. Keep him away from cats and if the classes don't work spay or nueter him, so if he has puppies and some are male the puppy would die. Best of Luck.

Having aggresion towards cats and other male dogs tends to be normal in adult male dogs. The dog problem is territorial and the cat is probably jsut dislike, either way i would try to keep him away from the things he shows agression to.

if you go to your dog's vet, i've heard of some herbal medications or something, to releive aggressin over all, to anything. i 100% understand you not believing in inhumane treatments, but this is just a natural aggression reliver thing. my cousin's dog was very aggresive towards strangers, including me, and he took a natural aggression mediacation, and he's sooo loving now, doesnt even snap at me!! i've seen this at some vet offices, but you can take your dog to his vet, and talk about this stuff. it usually works. any other questions about dogs, email me at puppy_rok316@yahoo.com
good luck!!! :-)

all i know is to have a big fence and not let him towards any other pets. he is probably like that since he was chained up and had a harsh life and everything. if you do have other pets then i don't know. it's good that you rescued him though.

what do you mean you "rescued him" you cant just take peoples dogs out of their yard..thats called stealing..and they obviously werent starving him if he had been there for three years...was he getting beat? i mean it really just soundslike you started watching this dog 3 years ago and saw he was always on his chain and stole him...
