For bacterial meningitis, the person is not contagious after 24-48 hours ...most meningitis are contagious..Contagious from kissing?: Yes

Contagious from saliva?: Yes

The bacteria are spread through the exchange of respiratory and throat secretions (i.e., coughing, kissing). Fortunately, none of the bacteria that cause meningitis are as contagious as things like the common cold or the flu, and they are not spread by casual contact or by simply breathing the air where a person with meningitis has been.

There are two types, viral and bacterial. Bacterial is not usually contagious, is caused from, most often, using needles. Viral on the other hand is severely contagious and the person with viral meningitis should be isolated until the disease has run it's course.
