hi.
im twelve years old. almost thirteen and i have so many different passions. singing, ballet, competitive debate, politics, communications, and journalism. The last three are the career choices i have. I've realized that it takes more than perfect grades to get into the most prestigious colleges. To get a head start on a long term project this summer, i was thinking that i should start volunteering, and it seems my options are limited. hospital, animal shelter, or a nursing home. i want to volunteer somewhere where i can LEARN and where i can be taken seriously and valued for my opinions and knowledge. i have no desire to chat on the computer as my friends do this summer, but it seems no one expects me to do more than just that. i do not want my young mind to go to waste without helping at least some people. please help.

You are well on your way to getting into an awesome college. It sounds like you have your head on your shoulders. Some things you might want to consider are:
1. Extracurricular activities in and out of school. I see you are thinking about volunteering. That is great. I would consider using my passions (singing, debate, ballet) in school as well. Become a member of clubs that hold your interests. If you can, assume leadership within those clubs.
2. Have you ran for a student office. Here we call it SGA or Student Government Association. If your middle school has it, you should run. I would go for this in high school as well. This would look good if you are considering a career involving politics.
3. When you get older, consider getting a part-time job. Colleges like to see students who are motivated and take charge of their own finances. It also demonstrates a good work ethic.
4. When you get into high school, see if your school offers classes that can be taken at a local college. This will give you credit going into the school of your choice, show the colleges that you mean business, and it will help prepare you for a taste of college-level classes.
5. Since you are interested in politics and communication/journalism, consider helping out or sitting in with the party of your choice during the next elections. You could also request permission to be an intern at a local television station with a reporter. These things would help you determine if you are focused on your career decisions.

The most important advice I can give you is...don't forget to be a kid! You are going to have many years to live as an adult. I know you are ready to plunge into your future, but ready or not it will come. Take time to be with your friends and enjoy being young!

Let me tell you something. Check out your local hospital, local vet clinic, shelters(children,animal,senior.homeless)...that is all you need to do.

But, I have a great Idea for you. Every summer what you need to do is start taking a class at a community college. Meaning start taking college courses and guess WHAT? You can skip freshman year of college and be a sophamore directly. Every summer slowly take 1 G.E class.
So start with:
History
Art
Anthroplogy
English..and math and just start.
Things you will need in college and get ahead of the game.
