Isn't the Bible meant to be a book of spiritual guidance, not a textbook? Isn't fussing over Genesis and Revalation worthless, isn't there really a deeper message in both these controversial books?

There is nothing scientific about the bible

The original Christians, before the age of reason and the enlightenment, considered everything in the Bible to be truth.

Now, since the Bible has been proven historically and scientifically wrong in several sections, people now defend the stance that the Bible is merely a book of guidance, as you said.

Unfortunately for Christians now, this stance is weak, as how can you accept part of a holy book, but choose to disbelieve the inconveniently incorrect sections?

A "true" follower of Christ believes that everything in the Bible is the truth of God, and frankly, few are willing to do this anymore with all the evidence against certain sections of the Bible.

You are already half way to your answer. First and foremost you have to keep in mind that the word "Bible" means library. It is a collection of books. You are especially right saying that it has a deeper meaning than just the scientific. However, it is most interesting to note that the science of archeology has revealed many, many facts that support much of the teaching and spirituality of the Bible.
It is a shame that Genesis and Revelation seem to be so controversial. They are actually very complimentary.

The Bible is a collection of divinely inspired books. The earliest book Genesis was written about 1688 BC and the last book Revelation written about 96 AD. Eighty percent of the bible is history, promises, and how to live ones life. The other twenty percent is believed by many to be unfulfilled prophecy.

Some of its statements made long ago are found to be scientifically accurate.

Yes your right but you also have to remember that back then the Catholic church said what went in the bible and what stayed out. They have found a gospel of Judais just lately and it was forbidden to be put in the bible..People should remember that the bible was made up by human beings experiences with the lord..It is a teaching tool on how to live your life and be good to people.Plus how to make the right choices in life. I beleive it is like a life map and everytime u go off the path then u look back on the map.Oh and I'd like u to know that I got so into typing this that I burned my green beans..hahahaha Just another life experience.

The Bible is definitely not scientifically accurate and neither was it meant to be. Sacred scriptures are meant to impart spiritual truths. Because our understanding and language are inadequate to express explicitly these Truths, they must be delivered to us in allegories and parables. It works much the same way that messages are given to us in dreams, that is, ideas must be given to us using events and objects with which we are familiar. Thus the Bible (as well as other sacred scriptures) uses historical events and objects to impart these Truths. It does not mean that these historical events actually happened in a literal way (although some may have). It's the same with dreams. Some dreams may be based upon historical fact (or future fact), but others may involve events that are purely fictional (dream symbols) while imparting an important fact.

The Bible is the world's all-time best selling book. About 2.5 billion copies have been printed which are available in over 700 languages.

The Earth is Round.
Job 26:10, Prov 8:27, Isaiah 40:22, Amos 9:6
the Bible revealed the truth in 1000 B.C. 2500 years before man discovered it for himself!

The Hydrologic Water Cycle
Ecclesiastes. 1:6-7, Ecclesiastes 11:3,Job 26:8, Amos 9:6
The water cycle was not fully understood until about 30 B.C. by a Roman engineer named Marcus Vitruvius.
Yet every aspect of the water cycle was fully revealed to mankind in 1600 B.C.! The Bible's description is in perfect harmony with modern science. Vitruvius was 1600 years too late!

A. "He wraps up the waters in his clouds, yet the clouds do not burst under their weight" (Job. 26:8, NIV).
B. "He draws up the drops of water, which distill as rain to the streams; the clouds pour down their moisture and abundant showers fall on mankind" (Job. 36:27-28, NIV)
C. "The wind blows to the south and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course. All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again (Ecclesiastes 1:6-7, NIV).

The Earth is suspended in nothing
"He spreads out the northern [skies] over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing" Job. 26:7

The Nature of Health, Sanitation, and Sickness
The listing for this section is too large for this page. But the scriptural references are Leviticus 12-14.

The Concept of Entropy
"In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing you will change them and they will be discarded" (Psalm 102:22-26, NIV).

The Stars are Innumerable
"He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars -- if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be" (Gen. 15:5, NIV).

The Existence of Valleys in the Seas
"The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of breath from his nostrils" (2 Sam. 22:16, NIV).

The Existence of Springs and Fountains in the Seas
"In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, on the seventeenth day of the second month -- on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened" (Genesis 7:11, NIV). See also Gen. 8:2; Prov. 8:28.

The Existence of Water Paths (Ocean Currents) in the Seas
"O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!...When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,...You made him [man] ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet...the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas" (Psalm 8:1,3,6,8, NIV).

People who say the bible has errors and isn't scientific, never can prove it. They are speaking out of there *ss.

Different people "believe" in different ways.

One choice is to make one's faith absolute, and question nothing about the ideas in ones religion. The argument for this approach (as I see it) is the supremacy of God. If God is seen as a perfect being, then God's word is all one needs to leads one's life. Questioning it cannot improve on its perfection. So one takes the teachings of the religion to be absolutely true (including aspects which relate to science) and tries to live by them.

Another approach is to question the religion. The thinking behind this (again, as I see it) is to try and understand the word of God better. Perhaps God's word is true and absolute, but it is equally possible that it is many-layered, and that there are more truths to be found if one strays from the literal interpretation.

It is a fairly recent development (during the last 200 years or so) that people have seen a conflict between science and religion. Many of the great scientists saw their work as a celebration of God's creation. Whereas some religious people saw it as an attack on their beliefs.

This has given rise to another approach. Many people stick to scientific ideas with the same vigour as religious people do to their faiths. One could argue that people have an inbuilt need to hold on to some concept or idea which is greater than themself. Something which will still exist after they have died. Science provides this for some people. It plays the exact same role as religion in their lives - that of ultimate truth independent of one's own life.

I personally think religion and science are both needed in order to understand life and the universe. One gives thought and feeling but cannot give a full appreciation of the beauty of nature. The other gives understanding and structure but without meaning.

..Perhaps another possible way of interpretting God's word is this: God may know everything, but why should he tell us it all in one go? Maybe both nature itself and the religious texts of the world are puzzles which have been given to us to solve.

The Bible also contains books of History

2006-07-29 18:43:07 · answer #10 · answered by YourDreamDoc 7 · 0 0

Because there are many scientific evidence that proves it and none (so far and probably never will) has contradicted it. I don't think this should be taught as a science book or anything but neither should evolution since it definetely does not have ANY evidence to back it up
