I think it has something to do with them finding a spot without their mark on it already. Once they find a spot without their scent (I am guessing they know the smell of their own poo?) they will mark it. It's all about marking their territory. Dogs are pack animals and very territorial. For proof go outside for a couple minutes... Do you hear a dog warning someone to stay off their territory?

Dog poop is worse than horse poop or anything else of that nature. It smells similar to human poop but with a bit of sourness to it. In some cases it can be so strong that you can taste it when you're around it.

I call it Dejah Do Do. Dogs are repeat poopers they tend to go in the same areas every time. Some use it to mark territory. Also when they smell the area they are checking things out. It's dog version of reading the news paper, they want to know what is going on in their environment.

My puppy Luka does that too. He is searching for previous places where he pooped. He smells it then goes. Dogs like strong smells.

They do that because they try to find the perfect spot and they are tying to poo on a spot that a dog has pooed.

They are checking to make sure that no other dog in the history of the world has gone in that location. They can tell too.

before going to the restroom, the dog checks all around, that the area is his territory, and that there isn't any other dog who has already claimed the territory.
