Hello Everyone
I just started feeding my 85 lbs Black Lab Iams Wet and Dry food. He is a little over a year old. Can anyone tell me how much of wet and how much of dry food he should get a day. I have checked the Iams website, but it only tells me how much dry to give him.
Thanks In advance for any help someone can give me. Take Care :)

I am so sorry you are being barraged by a bunch of PETA fanatics. Sure, food contains the less desirable, to humans, offal from animals, but humans' pickiness about eating offal doesn't mean that those parts of an animal are bad. Also, have you checked out what's in hot dogs?

We used to (40 years ago) boil up horse flesh for our dogs and added veggies and rice or potatoes to it. The dogs loved it and were healthy on it, but it was a lot of work to prepare it. We also gave them fish oil for their coats. Sounds gross, doesn't it? You could try making your own dog food in big batches and freezing it in portions. Or just buy Iams kibble.

Go to iamstruth.com,the iams cruelty was propaganda crap from PETA and veterinarians know and recommend Iams food for quality and health.I have studied animal nutrition and have been a Veterinary technician for 15 years.Just remember canned food has a higher calorie count so feed the recommended dry portion, monitoring your pets weight as it is a guideline only and just add in a tablespoon or so of canned for flavor.Think of it like this the good food companies spend billions in research and want your pet to live a long healthy life-live longer , buy more of their food.Vets recommend it because they know what they are talking about and love animals. There has been too much controversy over food with very little true information about what really is needed to maintain a healthy pet. Just a little add on as I thought you should know that no Iams and Science diet or ANY of the Hills products do not use BHA/BHT or Euthoyoxican(which was banned years ago) and do not cause cancer .I have studied with a veterinary NUTRITIONIST for over 10 years -who do you think has developed these diets?People really do not understand what by-product means- a high quality food(which has been around for many years and has been proven great vs, a new brand with little long term research done on it) uses only human grade ingredients.

I wouldn't give wet food to my dogs unless they absolutely won't eat the dry. If that's the case then I would only mix a couple tablespoons of the wet into the dry to coat the kibble. As stated before, wet food is not good for your dog for many reason. It's more fattening and not very nutritional.

I save hearig how undesirable Iams is for dogs, yet that merely isn't actual. that is a significantly better foodstuff than Purina and different food market producers. I raised countless dogs on Iams domestic dog, Iams Chunks and Eukanuba. all of them lived lengthy lives, usually loose loose well-being themes and were weight managed. That being stated, there are countless ingredients that are significantly better than Iams. I presently feed Innova domestic dog for huge breeds to my lab blend domestic dog. Canidae, Royal Canin, well being. relies upon on once you're searching for only a proper high quality canines foodstuff or a holistic, organic canines foodstuff. carry out a touch analyze. i love the Innova foodstuff and the elements can't be beat. My canines loves this foodstuff and his stools are impressive and agency.

I would say give him about 1/4 as much wet as dry. Contrary to popular belief, there is no nutritional value in wet dog food. It's used to stimulate a dog's appetite. That is why your dog should really be eating mostly the dry food. It's the food that has all the nutirents your dog needs.

If you want a good dog food get away from iams. It is full of fillers and not nutritious ingrediants. Alot of vets will recommend iams and science diet and neither one is a good dogfood. I switched mine to innova when i feed dog food, I am a raw diet person myself as i do not like what is put into pet foods and my dads sheltie died from the dog food companies incompetence.

What kelly c is saying is definately true............

I dont mean to be rude but I think you should check out this website....... http://www.iamscruelty.com/

Iams and P&G Cause Animals to Suffer Needlessly
For nearly 10 months in 2002 and early 2003, a PETA investigator went undercover at an Iams contract testing laboratory, where a dark, sordid secret was discovered beneath the the dog- and cat-food manufacturer’s wholesome image. Our investigator found dogs who had gone crazy from intense confinement in barren steel cages and cement cells, dogs who had been left on a filthy paint-chipped floor after chunks of muscle had been hacked from their thighs, dogs who had been surgically debarked, and horribly sick dogs and cats who were languishing in their cages, neglected and left to suffer without veterinary care.

It's too bad that you have just started feeding Iams. Unfortunately you have been yet another victim of their tactical sales which only means poor nutrition for your dog.

STAY AWAY from popular commercial brands of food. Foods like Beneful, Puppy Chow, Pedigree, Science Diet, Iams, Purina, Royal Canin, Eukanuba, etc. All use low grade by-product and fillers that are dangerous to a dogs health.

Iams is a cheap food that is made of ingredients that have been deemed unfit for human consumption so instead of getting rid of them, companies salvage them and them into pet foods.

Here are the ingredients of Iams, Science Diet and Purina
(three other popular but low grade foods):

Iams
-CHICKEN
-CHICKEN BY PRODUCTS (the feet, feathers, beeks, undeveloped eggs, ograns of dead, disease, or dying animals)
-CORN GRITS (low grade filler with not nutritional value, causes skin irritations)
-CORN MEAL(more low grade filler with no nutrition)
-FISH MEAL (undetermined type of fish)
-DRIED BEET PULP (undigestible filler)
-DRIED EGG PRODUCT (egg shells or those unfit for humans)

Sience Diet (this is the vet prescribe diet)
-BREWERS RICE (rice fraction)
-CHICKEN BY PRODUCTS
-CORN GLUTEN MEAL
-PORK FAT (dogs do not digest pork)
-CHICKEN LIVER (contains high levels of toxins)
-preserved with BHA/BHT (this is a CHEMICAL preservative proven to cause cancer)

Purina:
-CHICKEN
-BREWERS RICE
-CORN GLUTEN MEAL
-POULTRY BY PRODUCTS (they don't specify what type of meat)
-WHEAT FLOUR (no nutrition, common allergen)
-BEEF TALLOW (low grade fat for flavouring, no nutrition)
-CORN
-WHEAT GLUTEN (the startch from the wheat)
-FISH MEAL (unspecificed source)

Now, the previous three foods are seriously the same as eating McDonalds everyday for humans. They have NO nutritional benefits and ALL have ingredients that are linked to poor health outcomes like obesity, cancer, diabetes, skin irritations, etc. Feeding these low grade foods may seem like an economical way to go but when you have to start paying the vet bills for a sick dog you'll wish that you would have spent a little more money on good food to prevent these things from happening.

Now, here is Innova which is the HEALTHIEST pet food on the market. Notice that the company uses only whole, fresh human grade ingredients. there is nothing in this food that we wouldn't eat ourselves. the companies that I mentioned above have not evolved like other companies and DO NOT produce good foods.

Innova Adult:
-Turkey (good)
-Chicken (good)
-Chicken Meal (Excellent)
-Ground Barley (good)
-Ground Brown Rice (great)
-Potatoes (good)
-Natural Flavors (good)
-Ground White Rice (good)
-Chicken Fat (okay)
-Herring (good)
-Apples (great)
-Carrots (great)
-Cottage Cheese (good)
-Sunflower Oil (good)
-Alfalfa Sprouts (great)
-Egg (excellent)

Animals are so much like humans in the fact that a healthy diet and exercise will prevent the deadly illnesses that they face. Use your common sense. When you see things like "by-products" "corn" "animal" you know that the company is using questionable ingredients and only has money on its mind.

If you truly care about your pets health and want them around for a long time, you need to provide your dog with a nutritious diet. Other great human grade, holistic foods include Evolve, Canidae, Fromm, Solid Gold, Merrick, etc.

PS Good quality foods like Innova actually cost about the same as the low quality bags of food but you feed less so you actually end up saving money.

PPS As mentioned in a previous posting, dogs really don't need wet food or at least only a little of it. Wet foods are 70% water so the food has really no nutritional value. For dogs who do not drink much water, this can help make sure they are hydrated but otherwise, nix the wet food unless for a treat purpose only. You are taking away from the better nutrition found in dry foods.
