My world lit professor actually told me that most biblical stories, like Adam & Eve, David & Goliath, Sampson etc., where actually originally written to be children's stories. They are definitely simple enough for children to understand and beleive in. And I think that's the hook. Most organized religions are based on simple principles, so simple that they usually don't hold up in the face of complex scrutiny. But also so simple that anyone with basic functional intelligence and the ability to read can get them, believe in them and draw hope from them. If you're trying to gain popularity for any idea, you'll never go broke appealing to the lowest common denominator. That's why a rappers like Nas never outsell rappers like Nelly.

If you were asking about the story of Adam & Eve specifically, I'm not going to pretend I've studied the Bible, and you should ask the question to someone who has.

Because from year 0 (beginning of creation) to present day 2006AD, the truth still stands! Truth never changes. Some blokes would try to make a monkey out of you, but God's Word tells us that life begats after its kind. Humans came from humans (Adam and Eve), and will always do so. There is no ape in our ancestry. You can kiss a frog for a billion years and it will never turn into a prince. So what makes us think that given deep time we can turn pond scum into humans? Where does that information come from? It is more reasonable to believe that there is a God who made our first ancestors than to think that some kind of cosmic accident happened that fortuitously "begat" us all.

Because people are too lazy to understand how science really works on their own. When they go to church and the church tells them their version of how they view evolution and then gives them misinformation about why it doesn't work they believe it based on an appeal to authority. On top of that the church re-enforces the same old B.S. story about Adam and Eve and says that since evolution doesn't work (based on how they have misconceived it mind you) that the only other answer is that their story must be true (a false dichotomy).

There is much more to it than just this, but it's a start.

Even in old Hebrew manuscripts Adams means 'man' and Eve is 'mother of all living' no matter what you call them in English. If God created them, we all had to come from somewhere. The creation story is also found in many other very old languages including Chinese.

I don't know why, but if they believe that then Adam and Eve's children committed a mortal sin: incest.

Most people don't take it literally. It's more of a metaphor for the first human beings. Do you think we just all appeared here? We all came from one mother and one father.
