Look at it this way, if a bone or some other food particle pops up into the air, it might land on one side of the hat, slide down the other side into someone else's plate or mouth. So please remove your hats

Hats are utilitarian articles of clothing. Utilitarian means they perform a specific function generally associated with a job or activity. As such hats which are worn throughout the day to protect one's head from the elements are to be shed like coats, cloaks, and other protective garments because they have generally picked up travel dirt from the outside. It's akin to not having washed your hands prior to a meal.

It used to be rude to wear a hat in the presence of a woman, indoors, but thanks to feminists, that probably doesn't apply anymore.

In the US it is, I have noticed that in Mexico it is not, I guess it depends on where you are at the time.
