Great question. Read the story closely. For a boy to participate in a sacrifice in those days he would have to be at least 12 years old. By this time his dad is nearly 120 (I am off a bit there) There is no indication of any struggle between the two. Believe me, when I was 12 and if my Dad were coming at me with a knife, he would be in big trouble. Isaac was a part of the promise. He knew this from his father and mother. Being an only son, the real question and test was this: :OK, God. You made a promise. How are you going to work this one out?"

Isaac was old enough to carry the wood for the sacrifice (Gen 22:6). Many conservative scholars believe he could have even been an adult.
So, he was certainly capable of understanding. Also, he did obviously know by the time his father starting binding him up on the altar and he did not offer resistance. So, it seems that Isaac too was being faithful and obedient.

Hello friend,
Such a great passage to ask about!
Look up Genesis 22. Verse 5 speaks of a faith that only God could give where Abraham said "...I and the lad will go yonder; and we will worship and return to you".
Prior to this he had been told by God what he was to do with Isaac.
In verse 7 Isaac begins to wonder what's up, then in verse 8 Abraham makes a statement that had near and far implications.
Please don't miss this. He said "God will provide Himself a Lamb"...
The near application was that Abraham knew and had faith that God would provide a sacrifice and that Isaac would not have to die, or even as Abraham was willing to slay his son as God instructed, he knew God would raise him up. Abraham didn't know which, but he believed God and his faith was reckoned to him as righteousness.
The far implication is that God in the person of Jesus Christ would provide Himself as a sacrifice for our sin.
Abraham got it right either way.
So after all that the answer to your question is yes Isaac knew at a certain point. But he was obedient to his father as we are to be to our Father. Check out Romans 12:1,2.
Many Blessings,
2 Tim 2:7

I want to know why Abraham would let Isaac carry the wood for his OWN sacrifice. Or was the reason along the same strain as Jesus carrying his own cross? This just occurred to me, and I am actually surprised I never thought of it before...
It amazes me sometimes how the Heavens reveal Truth to us...

I was chased out of church years ago but I still know enough to get me in trouble. Isaac was a type of Christ! He was obedient unto death! Yes he knew but he did the will of his father!

It would seem as though he did not. God may have granted him a dream letting him know and I think that may be what happened. When Abraham - an old man - bound his son's hands, the son (being much stronger) could've easily resisted, but instead went willingly (like Jesus to the cross).

Leonard Cohen's 'Isaac's Song': "Son I've had a vision, and you know I'm strong and holy...I must do what I've been told" ...
Personally, I'd have crapped my loincloth if my father dragged me up a mountain to slash me on a rock ...

He had a suspicion, but as they got closer to the place he began to get freaked out, but was trying to put on a brave front. He knew he couldn't get away even if he tried, so he pretended he didn't have a clue. But, yes, he did a have a clue. It was a very scary clue too.
Why do you ask?
