Since God knows everything (if you feel otherwise, it means that God can't do anything), he knew, and knows, all mentally challenged people on this planet. It seems like a huge sacrifice for many people. Seems like a waste.
It is like God has a mental schedule of human events that he can choose to focus on. Even ones that won't happen until a 100 years from now. He literally can wait and anticipate a disaster, like 911, or the birth of a retarded baby.

---Update---
Unless the Catholic Church has made changes "AGAIN" (like limbo, and unbaptized babies), there are different levels of heaven to be expected.

God does not live in time. Nothing is a waste. We do not think as God does. No one knows the thoughts of God.
I have worked with retarded people and downs syndrome. they are quite sweet and can be interesting to be around. No waste there!

Earth is like a school. What we are here is our physcial body not our soul. Our souls won't be retarded. What we learn here we take that lesson with us, not our physcial bodies.
It is not a waste if the lesson they take with them is one they needed to learn. If you went to school and studied cooking and decided a year later to become a carpenter, and then a year later decided to become a cosmetologist, are all the knowlege you gained in all these diverse areas, a waste? No. You gained a lot of knowledge and take it with you wherever you go, no matter where you end up. All is not lost.
As humans we can only percieve what we can see, smell, taste, and hear and feel. What if, we do have a sixth sense and if we were able to use it could be aware of so many other things we can't fathom right now? We don't use 100% of our brains can you imagine what we might be able to achieve if we were able too.
My boyfriend would like me to ask you not to say "Retarded." It is mean. They don't choose to be "mentally handicapped." When you call someone "retarded" it is "ignorant" on your part and being "ignorant' is a choice. I hope your weren't being mean. Good question though. It is nice to have intelliegent questions and people posting.

God said His ways are not ours, they are higher than ours so we cannot know them. Who are we to say who is retarded or not? I know children and others who have Down Syndrome and other disabilities, and believe me, God made no mistakes,,,these are the most loving, compassionate, sweet people. They are openhearted and love unconditionally; they are nonjudgemental and do not look at what most would consider to be faults or flaws in others. Because they can do this and many of us so-called clear thinking normal people cannot or do not, maybe we are the retards. I hope and trust that Heaven will be filled with just the kind of souls they have...book knowledge, intelligence...is that really SO important? Who among us recalls all the facts and figures we were taught in school? If you don't, does that make you inferior....or retarded? What matters to God is the heart. Maybe we had best hope that WE ourselves will be thinking and acting as God wants us to now, otherwise we may not have to worry what others will be like there.

I've always thought about this, too. Instead, I think that the concept of individuality with personalities, etc. doesn't exist in heaven. When people have an enlightenment experience (= heaven), the whole universe is experienced as One thing that is me, you, rocks, trees - we are that and there is no we in that experience -- so .... the individual and all the stuff associated w/ a person (personality, brain, cognition, sight, etc.) are not part of it.

Do not confuse intelligence with consciousness and love...of course they think clear...they chose to be retarded in the first place to experience some life issues so they could understand...but put it that way...intelligence has nothing to do with Love and Consciousness, intelligence is just a point of view and by perception

If they arrive in Heaven with mental defects, all God has to do is to instruct one of his angels to pluck a heaven fruit from the Tree of Knowledge and feed it to the new arrival and instant perfect knowledge of all is their isnt it?
If they arrive with physical disabilities ( eg one armed, no eyes, no speech etc ) God would then only need to feed them from the Tree of Eternal Life? ( I imagine it to be like instant regeneration of limbs, cells and spirit... its gotta to be perfect!)
Otherwise, heaven would be just as torturous as hell!!.. Imagine being born disabled and dying intio a heaven where everyone is perfect, angels are pristine but we are not, n unable to fly cause we born with one wing... thats not only for 100 years or so, but for eternity!! goodness!

I think human's dignity always exists and it's clear, so They have always been worthy of respect.
Also I don't think that all our talents and knowledge-what make us think we are superior-are enough to understand the really Big Picture of God or our existence, maybe someday in an Eternity...

Yes, God unretards them so that they can think clearly but then they return to earth and join a religion and become retarded again.
