Progress is nice, science is nice... no doubt there. But of course we (and a lot of non-religious people too) value morals above progress. Is it true progress to murder thousands of people to learn the best way to build a weapon? I'd call that a cost that is too high for progress.

Y'see, values exist both inside and outside of religions. Sure, there's some variations on those in certain topics (abortion, capital punishment, etc) but it's also really clear in others (first degree murder, theft, etc.) and therein lies your problem:

Values exist outside of religion. You would then be getting rid of religion but would still be stuck with the values that you seem to hate so much.

BTW--much of the "progress" has come from people who have or had very strong faiths.

This also enables people to advance not only externally but internally. Civilization is only as strong as it's foundation! Every birth is usually a painful process and humanity and its quest for spirituality was no different. As the world's religions continue to grow, they will mature and it will be interesting to see the future civilizations that thrive and push ahead through the use of a moral compass to guide their way.
