My 89 camry, the best commuter car I've ever owned, suddenly wouldn't turn over. It starts, so I don't think it is starter/ignition issues, I think it's in the fuel lines, fuel pump, etc. Any ideas? Thank you!

When I turn the key, it goes to start but doesn't remain at idle. I have a new fuel filter I attempted to change out, but I'm not strong enough to loosen the flare nut to relieve the gas pressure and I don't exactly know anyone that would be willing to help me. I also don't want to shell out $120 to get a mobile mechanic to my house to tell me what I already know...

I don't know what you mean by "it starts, but doesn't turn over"

I think you have the nomenclature backwards, that is, I am thinking it turns over (the starter motor whirs, the engine goes around), but it doesn't start, doesn't fire, doesn't keep going

the most common cause of this kind of problem is the fuel pump, but on rare occasions, you can luck out and have a plugged fuel filter that is really cheap and easy to replace (usually fuel filters don't clog so bad that it won't start at all)

you can check to prove it is a fuel supply problem by getting some starter fluid (a spray can of ether) and have somebody spray it into the engine air intake while somebody cranks it

if everything is okay except no fuel, you should get firing and perhaps a short start with just the starter fluid

you can also disconnect the fuel line at the engine, hold a coke bottle or something over the end, and crank the car and see if gasoline comes out

probably fuel pump

good luck

Your description is really confusing....are you saying that the engine will crank but not start? If so, a good place to start is by replacing the gas filter.

Get a crane and turn the car over . Then have it hauled off.

check your rev limitator. if it's set too low then your car just putters and dies you can actually adjust it so your car revs higher so it will stay on. i had to do that to my old car. it's also free it you can find the dang thing. i had to ask somebody where mine was.
