John 6:52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" 53 So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not as the fathers ate and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever."

That Jesus' body would be broken and his blood shed as atonement for our sins.

It says a lot about his listeners too. They were nonspiritual and couldn't discern the true meaning of Jesus' words. Just like people today who believe that when they take communion they are actually eating human flesh and blood that as been magically transformed instead of realizing that they are celebrating the New Testament "looking back" equivalent of the Jewish sacrificial laws that looked ahead to the perfect sacrifice of Christ.

Here's some commentary from www.biblegateway.com

The advantage of the manna was small, it only referred to this life; but the living Bread is so excellent, that the man who feedeth on it shall never die. This bread is Christ's human nature, which he took to present to the Father, as a sacrifice for the sins of the world; to purchase all things pertaining to life and godliness, for sinners of every nation, who repent and believe in him. (Jn 6:52-59)
