Your hair is brittle if it's prone to split ends. Shampoos don't help 'coz they just clean your hair. Get a really good conditioner. You can use Pantene (the ones in tubes, which are probably the most expensive) or you can get another more expensive brand.

There is not a product on the face of the earth that can mend a split end. No matter what the hair care product commercials or the hairstylists say. Once a hair is split, it is split for good.

Some products can temporarily smooth down a split by loading your hair with cones, but once you wash your hair the split is still there.

You need to trim your hair to remove the splits. If you leave them, the splits will travel up the hair shafts and the hairs will break off short.

Once your hair is trimmed to remove the split ends, use gentle products that don't contain cones and sulphates. You can find wonderful, gentle hair care products at your local whole foods store. Stop abusing your hair with harsh chemicals and heat drying and styling. Don't rip a hairbrush through tangled hair. Gently detangle with a seamless wide-tooth comb. Never, never, never, brush wet hair. Again, gently detangle and comb smooth with a seamless wide tooth comb.

Consider using a light weight oil, like jojoba to moisturize your ends and length. (It just takes a few drops. And no, it won't make your hair look greasy if you use it right.) If your ends are moisturized and protected, they will be far less likely to split and your hair will look better overall.

Shampoos are not the whole answer; good quality conditioners (even light ones) for your hair type do help, but prevention is better than cure.

Your solution: Step 1 is to get a really good hair cut. Never, ever, let your hairdresser use a razor on your hair, and avoid tapering cuts. Instead, go for a scissor 'blunt' cut. You may need to find a talented stylist for that.

Step 2. Treat your hair gently. Avoid vigorously towel drying it. While your hair is wet, starting from the underneath hair at the nape of your neck, comb gently through it, layer by layer, until you've worked your way over your head. Always use a wide-toothed comb on wet hair. Do not use the top heat setting on the dryer to dry your hair.

Step 3. General care: Forget using plastic bristle brushes. Buy a medium-firm pure bristle brush to use on your dried hair. (There's a good selection of purse sized ones.) If you use hair rollers, avoid the plastic bristly ones. When you're out in the sun, cover your hair up. If you don't carry around a sun hat, pop a real silk scarf in your purse to use when needed. Silk is good on hair; man-made fiber is not--too much static.

I know this sounds like a lot of bother, but when you develop your hair routine, it becomes easy--and it is worth it.

Jasons ORGANIC shampoos, available at your health food stores, or vitamin shops. Neutrogena has some great smoothing conditioner! This is the best time for layering, and have those nasties trimmed out! Then you get some gel or scrunching spray, and style with these! Matrix Dirty Trix is a favorite of mine! I hope this helps!
