This Fall I will be biking to school/work. The trip is about five miles. I would love some tips on making the trek more enjoyable. I will be carrying books with me at all times and would love some tips on how to prevent me from arriving at school soaked in sweat. Thanks!

Okay, first, WEAR A HELMET! We'd like for you to be around for a few more decades. Get a cargo rack so you don't need to carry your books on your back (helps with cooling your person). Some come with an integrated fender so road dirt and water don't spray up your back either. Get some tunes (IPOD et al.) Try to find a flat route to school or have plenty of gears available. That's all I can think of, but the helmet is MOST important...

If you don't want to be too sweaty, you may want to have a shirt change with you. I wouldn't recommend wearing headphones, you'll need your ears to hear the traffic. Get a rack to carry books. You may also want to get saddlebags you can attach to the rack in case you need to carry more than you can put on a rack. You'll need both front and rear lights if there's any chance you'll need to ride at night. You'll also need to carry a portable tire pump and a spare innertube in case of flats. Find a good bike shop nearby where you can take you bike for regular repairs. And always carry a water bottle. Its important to stay hydrated when you ride.

i agree with ren hoek. wear a helment. yeah, it can mess up your hair, but drivers can be stupid sometimes. So it is worth the bad hair do in teh rare event that you get hit. I would try to avoid main roads. Especailly in the afternoon. the more cars drving on a raod, the hotter it will be. I like to wear sunglasses to cut down on glare. Definitly carry some water. An Ipod would be good, but if there is alot of traffic, i wouldn't, you need to be able to hear whats going on around you. and if possible, ride with someone else. someitmes it's fun to talk plus there is safety in numbers.

Yeah, helmet is paramount!

Don't bother with any of that sensible sounding stuff though! Drop as many stairs as you pass, manual every straight, and jump every slope. At least this way you'll enjoy the ride and develope some skills on your journeys to school
