I'm on a religous topic binge today. And I was wondering what people of religions feel about the story behind the DaVinci Code, and the whole myth that Jesus had a child, and the family still exists.
I'm not going to argue any points, I would like clean, well thought and respectable answers.
I'm mostly just wondering what the big deal is.

EDIT:::
I didn't mean the book, but the theory. There has been more research on the subject then just a fiction book.
PS; I know Dan Brown's book was fiction. I actually didn't care for it because I thought he overanalyzed and deystroyed some of the world's greatest paintings. (I'm an art geek)

The story is fiction, and while the Catholic church has done some things that have lead to conspiracy theories, the truth is that Mary Magdalene was not intimate with Jesus, nor is there a secret society of His descendants.
Any organization in existence as long as the Catholic church will attract such ideas and be the topic for fictionalizations. That is what the DaVinci Code is, a fictional account. My problem is not with the author, unless he believes he is telling the truth, but with the people who choose to see this movie as truth. That is as logical as thinking "Cars" or "Superman Returns" are true stories.

The big deal is that unfortunately people have come to think that what little information is contained in the Bible is in some way complete and accurate. Obviously, it is not! We mustn't forget that letters in the Bible were written many years after Jesus' death and then when the Bible was "canonized" much pertinent information was left out. Why? Because at that time religion was also about political power and the leaders at that time were attempting to create a single absolute to control the masses.
Because much of the masses of that era were still worshipping the Goddess, connections with the feminine were being wiped out. One (and there are many) facet of wiping out the feminine, was the emerging view that sex was bad. Sex began to be associated with the feminine. The shift into masculine worship and culture were taking hold and a dogma that claimed (at least strongly suggested) that Jesus never had sexual relations began to form. (Although this seems utterly ridiculous, I realize. I mean, think about it for about two seconds. He comes here to be a man and he never experiences sex? What a rip-off that would be!) Anyway, these factors (and others) are just a teeny tiny scratch on the surface of the circumstances affecting Mary M's full story/relationship to be excluded from the texts. So, once again, the big deal today, is that so many people are afraid to imagine that there is more to the story than what we can read in the Bible and almost completely, people's religious connections (ie. Churches, clergy, etc.) are demanding that people keep their minds small and closed.
So while The DaVinci Code is a story, I think it's entirely possible that there may be parts of it that are real.

If Mary Magdalene was married to Jesus, I would have to wonder why she isn't referred to in the bible as, "wife of Jesus." There is no evidence for this stuff. It is someone's wild imagination.
While we're on the subject of this mysterious character, I do believe that she has been the victim of a tremendous miscarriage of justice, at least her memory has. I always feel that it is because she is a woman who had more prominence than the early church could handle a woman having. The gospels mention her as if she is a famous face in the crowd and assume that the reader is familiar with her. But what is this familiarity suppose to be. It is not for being a prostitute. It is amassing how the Catholic church could have carried that lie throughout the centuries, when the gospels say nothing of the sort. Perhaps her claim to fame should be obvious as being among the women who first encounter the risen Jesus.

While the Da Vinci Code as a whole is fiction, many things stated in the book are fact. There is another theory the Jesus had siblings. Some even believe Judas was his brother. There are so many theories that now more than ever, you need to believe in yourself and what YOU feel is right. As long as you harm no one, and be the best person you can, you are living your life as planned.

All I know is that book just put into fiction a lot of very compelling research that archaeologists have been doing for a half century. I think there is something to that, despite the fact that most christians, mostly because they cannot handle the idea that they have been misled, will tell you it's all fiction. Do some more research. Read "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" (Get on eBay) Get more ideas.

I'm a muslim but I loved the book..
I'm actually supporting ever single word in that book coz it's kinda what my religion is based on, Jesus was a prophet from God, God should be the one to be worshiped not a prophet he sent, new testament is man written, just a bunch of crap, no offence. There isn't prrof Jesus was married and had a child, in the same time there ain't no proof he wasn't. Plus jesus's supporters were really jealous of the fact jesus handed magdeline the future of christianity, so they kept it a secret.

Mary Magdelene does appear to be important to early Christians, and appears to be somewhat "intimate" with Christ in non-canonical religious texts.
Does this mean that she was the Wife of jesus. No, and there is no evidence to support any claims that Jesus had a wife or children.
With that said, it would be a little odd for someone, who is in there 30's, of that time period to not have a wife. Also several christian churches, including a large one (i think it is the LDS church) do support the claims that christ had children.
The big deal about all this is for some Christians this would change much of their doctrine, and would lead people to think they have been lied to.
Personally, none of this would change my views on Jesus or his teachings.

It's all fiction; don't know why people got so excited at the movie when that story of Magdalene and Jesus was known many years before that book was written.

Sometimes I feel like the whole idea is to slander Jesus .He came to Earth to be able to understand ,he was tempted in every possible way to understand, I'm sure women threw themselves at him,and parents threw their daughters at him,but if he did not abstain how can he say prostitution is a sin? While we don't like to pay taxes ,we don't say the tax collectors are sin full I'm sure when he banged his hand with a mallet he felt like throwing it ,but he teaches self control. I think the story goes against the grain.
