No they do not pay well but it is stable paycheck. I have a pay chart that I download every year.
We get FREE medical to a certain degree...I do not use the on base hospital because I do not care for military doctors...but I can go offpost to be seen FREE of charge unless I am on Tricare Standard then I have to pay 20% of whatever the cost is. Dental is not FREE for family members...that is like $20 a month.

BAH (basic allowance for housing) is based on rank and duty station...some areas get more because of the cost of living for that area so it is not equal across the board. We live offpost because where we are at the on post housing is small.

We get food money which is like $272 a month.

Now with what all is going on the world today...Iraq and Afghan...ask yourself do you really want to be away from your family all the time. Right now my husband is on his 6th deployment overseas. It is not easy especailly when you have children. I know it is his job but it is not easy. But we have everything we need and want because it is hard out there in the civilian world.

Single soldiers do not get as much as a married soldier would get.

I will say this much...I know my husband can find a job doing what he does now out in the civlian sector making far more money...but we do live well on his military pay because we learn to budget.

It's not the pay so much as the benefits. You get free food, free shelter, free medical and dental (Just remember, these are Army doctors and dentists though: don't expect too much), access to correspondence courses to take towards college degrees, etc. Every year you are in, you get a printed statement, letting you know exactly what Uncle Sam's giving you in return for your service.
Your pay increases with Rank and Time in Grade (another word for 'Rank'), if you stay at the same rank too long though, they will get rid of you. It's "Move Up or Move Out" in the Army. You get additional pay if you're married, if you have kids, etc.

If you're married, you'll be living either in Army housing or offpost. If you live offpost, you'll be given an additional housing allowance, depending on what the offpost rent is. You get like 4 sets of BDUs (camos), boots, socks drawers, 1 dress uniform, etc. As they wear out you are expected to pay for replacements. All cleaning and pressing is on you too.

The longer you're in the Army, you'll come to realize it's much smarter to have TWO sets of everything: Two sets of socks, boots, T shirts, etc. one for use and one just for inspection displays. Obviously, the extra set comes out of your pocket, but it will save you in the long run from spending all day trying to raise a shine on a pair of work boots, folding and refolding socks, tshirts, etc.
Also, the Army almost forces you to get Direct Deposit. You get a check on the 1st and the 15th, and one thing about it, you may not get GREAT pay, but it is absolutely always there on the 1st and 15th.

The pay scale used in the Armed Forces is based on rank and years of service. When considering pay, one must keep in mind that medical and dental is completely free of charge for the soldier. Also, you are provided with or recieve a special pay for housing, depending on the situation. The are other special pays available for special skills, such as the ability to read/speak foriegn langauges. Finally, college tution is normally provided free of charge to soldiers. There are other benefits, there is also, reasons why those benefits are there. Are you considering joining the Army?

well if you are single, Army pay will be more than enough, besides your paycheck you get free housing and free food. when i was in, as an E4 i had plenty of money with a lot left over to save. i didnt have any complaints. now if you are married and have children, i dont think that the Army pay is sufficient.

The Army does not pay new enlistees particularly well, but pay is not the reason most people join the Army. Benefits can be excellent, depending on your length of service and MOS.

It depends on what type of job you do for the Army. If you're just starting out then the pay is low.
