Does the FHWA require companies to give drivers some sort of break through out the course of a route?

Yes. They for one cannot drive longer than 10 hours a day. If they are caught by DPS, depending on their mood they will impound the truck. Thats why it is very important to truthfully fill out their logbook correctly.
