YES, and no. As one poster said, try to get them from plants and vegetables, since taking in sugary stuff wastes grams with no nutrition. Atkins suggests for phase one taking a medium salad, no carb dressing, which gives you some minerals and some fibers, but no fast burning sweets. Remember the idea is to cut down on insulin. Atkins was not a weight loss specialist, he was a cardiolgist, and the diet was to avoid heart attacks, and diabetes, not to lose weight. Anyone who has doubts on Atkins, search for "eskimo diet". There were no carbs on the ice floes of the Arctic.

And, remember Atkins is NOT "low carb". It is low carb with supplements to replace nutrition normally coming from carbs, and that is a different animal.

I lost 35 pounds on Atkins. I feel great, I am 64, used to get tired after 20 minutes of manual labor, now it's 3 hours of hard manual labor at high altitude in the mountains. Bp was 130/72. last week it was 104/68, though usually it's 113/68. I've been working so hard I actually started gaining weight as I build muscle.

Those who think Atkins is b.s., almost always did not read the book thoroughly, and thus did not follow the directions. It is complex, and failure to follow directions is dangerous. I will explain why.

I take daily, a very large number of supplements.

1. 4 vitamin C 500 mg, no chewable.

2. 4 multivitamins, such as Centrum. Failure to do so will result in serious vitamin deficiency, thus extreme fatigue. When someone says they tried the diet, but felt terrible, I know right away they did not read book, did not take their vitamins.

3. 4 600D calcium daily. Less than 4 can induce osteoporosis, you can break bones or teeth can break or rot.

4. 16 metamucil or Wal-mart equate fiber pills. Failure to use can impact you, which killed Elvis. I got impacted and had to dig myself out with my finger, which has to be the grossest thing I ever had to do in my life.

5. Stool softeners, 2 per day, see 4.

Before you start, get Ketone Test Strips, around $7 from Wal-mart, test your urine, and when you start, test again to see how fast you burn.

Before you start, get the 1992 printing, in the 2002 version, they played PC games, claim you really don't need supplements which is nuts. Read; read; read. it is a complex diet, the really best part is you can lose weight with absolutely no hunger if you follow instructions carefully.

I am rather hypoglycemic, which he called metabolic resistance. That means I am stuck forever at zero grams a day. It would be a real bummer but I am not a fussy eater, and I feel so much better than I felt in years. Plus I look much better. My loss of weight was definitely an aphrodisiac FOR MY WIFE!!! :)

I lost over 40 pounds on the Atkins diet 2 years ago! Regardless of what people say it does work! How ever you can not cheat on this diet! If you eat anything sweet you ruined it ! If you have a hard time sticking to a diet then do not go on this one! Try getting your 20 grams from fiber. Good luck!

Yes, definitely.

During induction stick to dark, leafy greens for your carbs, and limit them to 2 cups per day. The rest of your meals will be meat.

You cannot cheat on this diet. It is qualitative, not quantitative.

Also, when you stop, you will gain back all the weight plus 25%.

They should be from the list that is in the Atkin's book. Calories can make a difference.

No it doesn't but you get to eat more if you choose wisely there for it is easier to stick to. They have a web site also that will give you good recipe ideas and a counter for grams of carbs. Good Luck

The carbs should come from high protein food with a low carb count. I'm not entirely clear what you're asking or I might give a better answer.

yes - no sugar carbs or grain carbs. The 20 carbs should come from veggies (green or white) - no tomatoes, carrots or potatoes.

No. You just don't want them all coming from calorie laden desserts.
