its a submissive gesture.they respect you as the alpha dog(person)it isn't that they fear you , they just know that you are the provider, and dominant.

If you find a dog that will look you in the eye for more than 5 seconds then it is not a good dog to have. This means it is not intimidated by you and considers itself the alpha dog instead of considering you to be the one in charge.

Many dogs consider staring in the eye as a dominance issue. By looking away the dog is showing you are dominant.

Extended periods of eye contact with predatious carnivores signifies they are intent on prey and studying for a moment of weakness or opportunity to strike or begin the attack. If you stare at a dog you intimidate it as it wonders if you want to kill it. Be careful with dogs you don't know... they may take you up on the challenge and you could find yourself becoming a chew toy. It's a dominance factor.

Prolonged eye contact, in dog body language, is a show of aggression. But it depends on the dog. Both of my labs love eye contact with me, and will start running around the house like puppies when I smile at them. Go figure! :-)

Dogs consider a stare straight into their eyes as an aggressive challenge. Your dog views you and family as part of his pack, so the last thing he wants from another pack member is aggression. He also views you as dominant and he would not want to challenge a dominant pack member.

I have a nine year old lab, and i can look into his eyes for minutes at a time -- maybe its because he is older. Most dogs, younger dogs -- its a head of the pack mentality....

because staring is a threatening behaviour in dogs so when you stair in to your dogs eyes it translates to
"if you don't submit and look away I'm going to attack you!"
that's why it will look away to avoid a fight. so watch out if he doesnt back down as he may protect himself
its the same for most animals

I recently noticed that with a puppy one of my roomates has.
I was thinking its a combination of that they have ADD and
that they are not real bright but then again neither are cats and cats like to stare back at you. Maybe you are ugly and have bad breath.

it is instinct. if a wolf stared at an alfa dog for more than five seconds the alfa dog would seriously injure the wolf. they see us as the alfa dog.
