How about this- if lightning hits that tree in the forest and the tree falls because the lightning hit it- does it make a sound? My answer to both questions is yes. The sound just doesn't assault your eardrums because they are not around to hear the sound.

Here's a better question....If a tree falls in the forest and then springs back up just because there was no one around to hear it, do all the squirrels freak out? :)

Yes. Sound is created by vibrations. The tree would still create a vibration when it fell - therefore sound - even if no one could hear it.

it does make a vibration when it crashes to the ground... whether that is interpreted as SOUND depends on whether there is something there to pick up that vibration and convert it... Say an eardrum of an animal.... to sound

I don't believe it makes a sound. Sound is registered by our eardrums, therefore, if there is no eardrum (person) around when the tree falls...no sound.
