Empire State Building,Metropolitan Museum, Buttery Park and from a Battery Park you can take a boat to visit Statue of Liberty. It depends what you like. You can just take a walk in the Village. But what ever you do Have fun and hope, you'd get a good weather.

I spent one day in NYC, got there about 9am and left at 9pm. The weather was awful, torrential rain and so many of the things we planned had to be shelved. Even in the rain though we went up the Empire State builiding. (and could not see a thing), If you don't like heights, it is still worth going through the main doors and seeing the entrance hall.
We then walked down 5th Avenue and went into Tiffany's, where even though we now looked like drowned rats we were treated as queens. We didn't fancy shopping, but again the decor is fantastic. We had a meal in a little Greek Resaurant near Bloomingdales and then went for a ride in Central Park by horse and carriage. By which time we had to go and buy some new clothes in Bloomingdales as we were soaked through to our underwear. Then we went to the library, again the buliding was fantastic. There was also a lovely Catholic Church on 5th Avenue too.
Although our day in NYC was a complete washout, the fact we had to keep running into buildings to try and get warm meant that we did nothing of the usual touristy stuff. We found some hidden gems and some beautiful buildings.
Rather than be regimented, just arrive and follow your nose or instinct. New york has so much more to offer than shops, and although we have to return to do the things we had wanted to do, NYC was our favourite day of a rain washed out trip to the US

Here are some ideas of what you can do while in NYC. First, get a good tour map. Then I recommend you take the BIG APPLE double decker tour bus for an overview of the city. There are several different neighborhoods so I'll highlight these and what to see:
Upper East Side: Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim, Whitney Museum. Walk up and down Madison Avenue for awesome shops and boutiques 96th - 57th st. Walk Park Avenue for architecture all the way to Grand Central Terminal and see the treasures located within. Walk along 5th Avenue to see/go in and out of Central Park - go for a run, go to the Central Park Zoo, go to the Carousel, go for a gondola ride at the boat house.
UPPER WEST SIDE:
Museum of Natural History -a must! on Central Park West,
Walk along Columbus Avenue. Visit the West side of Central Park and pay respects to John Lennon's Strawberry Fields.
MIDTOWN:
Shopping - 57th St (Chanel and the gang), Fifth Avenue - must see Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks and FAO Schwartz - many other fun stores.
St. Patrick's Cathedral
Museum of Modern Art
Sony Bldg
Rockefeller Center
Go west to awesome new Time Warner center and visit the new Mandarin Hotel bar/restaurant for awesome view and treats!
Oh, Bloomingdale's is on 59th St and Lexington.
Empire State Bldg.
The Intrepid Aircraft Museum is fascinating and on the West side...worth the visit even if you have no kids.
CHELSEA:
Walk around the blooming area sprouting awesome restaurants and shops. Chelsea Pier is fun.
WALL ST:
Pay respects to the 9/11 victims and heroes at the WTC site., Walk Wall St., visit the Chase Hdqtrs, Federal Reserve. Seaport area is great to see.
THE VILLAGE:
Funky shops in the West Village. Walk through the NYU Washington Square Park. The East Village has some shops from new artists and designers
SOHO:
Great galleries and shops on n off West Broadway. Walk thru to Little Italy for awesome meals and desserts...walk through Chinatown. CANAL STREET has stall after stall of Designer "copies"...bring cash and bargain and watch your purse!
These should put an awesome smile on your face. Bring your camera and takes lots of photos to remember your trip. You'll have a blast! OH Don't forget...BUY this weekly magazine: TIMEOUT NEW YORK on any newstand to see what's going on each week/day. :)

Fifth Avenue from 105th Street to 81st Street is designated as Museum Mile. There are many museums along this stretch of this historic street.
The Museo Del Barrio has Spanish and Spanish American Art. This and the Museum of the City of New York are on the northern end of Museum Mile. There are various types of museums all down the street. The most southern is the Metropolitan Museum of Art on 82nd Street. Don't let them fool you with the entry fee. You CAN pay what you wish - even $1 to get in.
The nice part of 5th Avenue is also looking at the architecture - man of these buildings were built as private homes for the rich at the turn of the last century.

One day isn' t enough to visit new york however you can spend a good time in this day , that is what i think because it is the biggest city in USA and one of the largest cities in the world how ever it isn t the capital of USA , it is washington .
New york is one of the world leading business centres and in it is a busy sea port . In its harbour stands the Statue of Liberty , a symbol of freedom for people all over the world and you can visit it .
Many skyscrapers have been built , icluding the Empire State Building and you can visit it too .
The united nations has its headquarters in new york . you can walk in its streets and see a lot of people and you can visit the zoo in it too .
You can spend a nice time in gardens or see football matches .
There are a lot of things you can do . Have a nice day .

Just don't go to chinatown, that's for sure. It's really just like a big dollar store and the stuff there is cheap and easily breaks and it's really just not worth going there at all. It also smells really bad there......go to http://www.newyorkcity.com . There are a ton of things you can do there. I'm actually going there, too, on August 13. Oh yeah, and if you're only planning on going there for one day, don't go to the statue of liberty or the empire state building, because the lines are HUGE and you literally wait in them for 4 hours before you even do anything. Go to Central Park and Time Square and museums and stuff. Have Fun!

When I went with hubby we took a fairy past ellis island and the statue of liberty but didn't stop at either.
We went to the WTC site and then we walked around, looking AT things (times square, china town, empire state building) but not really going anywhere.
Then, I went on a bus trip with my sister, we went to FAO Schwarts, (great place even if you aren't there to shop) we saw a few BEAUTIFUL churches, went to Rockafeller Center, and took a long walk through Central park, ending up at the natural history museaum.
I am looking forward to the next trip... a broadway show, the rockettes, and dinner at a nice resturaunt.
