Well, you sort of mislead me with your question once I read the description. I AM an extreme cat lover. I love cats that skateboard, and jet ski and sky dive. Cats that do extreme activities. Those cats are sweet. They always dress cool and have tattoos and all the other cats want to be like them. They're cats without agendas, and I love those cats.
I didn't realize that you meant do I extremely love cats.
Not as much as your crazy mother in law. Holy cow...20 cats? Is she starting an army?
I did that whole feeding strays thing with a homeless guy and the same thing happened. Eventually I was feeding like 7 homeless dudes every morning. Then I was like enough is enough. And the homeless are a lot harder to shoo away with a broom than a cat. Let me tell ya! Plus they always pooped in my garden.
Hope this helps!

The most cats I have had at one time were three. Having as many as your mother isn't necessarily abnormal. I think the most important thing is, is she capable of giving them the care they need. When I had three in door cats I had a litter box for each of them and one back up litter box. Now I have just one cat but he has two litter boxes. Also bringing them to the vet for their shots and having them spayed and neutered is important. Anyway, I can see why you dislike cats. I had a friend who's parents bred many a litter. He has no desire to have any pets now. In your mom's case it may be excessive but if it makes her happy and the cats are well taken care of then I see no harm in it. Some people like it and some don't.

I have one cat at my parent's house, and yes, she is pretty much good for nothing, but I guess it's the companionship.
When I'm out on my own soon, I'm looking into getting a cat just to have something around because living alone as I find, is pretty boring. I do like it because I don't have anyone annoying me, but when friends aren't around and there's nothing to do, at least the cat is milling about.

Yes, I love cats. When I moved into my house, there were app. 13 stray cats hanging around. N ow there must be around 20...I don't feed them unless they come to the door, I found out some of my neighbors feed them also. Your Mom sounds as if she has a compulsion to feed the cats. Some people even "hoard" cats, or collect them; they can't see one cat being without food or suffering. "Feed them, and they will come", applies to cats. The more you feed, the more will come.

Cats are more important issue than it is usually supposed to be. In our age of overpopulation, strict measures have to be taken to control birth rate. Under such circumstances, a cat becomes a perfect substitute for a child, grandchild… and even for a partner in life. Cats are certainly preferable to dogs, at least for those who live in an apartment, they are more cleanly and less loud. Cats living with people without contact with other cats become very understanding.

I do respect your opinion and feelings with regard to animals...however I could never imagine my life without animals in it. We have 6 cats, 4 are truly my mothers, and they are the oldest, i have a 5 month old tortoiseshell kitten and i absolutely adore her, she sleeps under my chin every night, and washes my face EVERY morning, and i adore her. My sister has a 6 week old white kitten...not sure how much she adores him yet, but im pretty certain she will reach the same levels of blind adoration as my mother and I have. And did you know that stroking a cat lowers your blood pressure? It is scientifically proven!!!!

That is a little extreme.
She may be an animal hoarder. It is the newest "syndrome" being treated by mental health professionals. Worth looking into, maybe she needs treatment.
I do like cats. One at a time though. They make quiet, restful companions, and for me petting them is relaxing.
