I rescued a kitten who im guessing is approx 2-3 months old. One of my two cats had "adopted" her as her baby and the kitten lays with her and kneads her belly and nurses from her. I rescued the older cat also and she has never had kittens since she has lived with me but I believe she had some before. Is the adoptive kitty momma really producing milk? Can cats lactate like that without having been pregnant? The kitten also eats hard food and I don't have a problem with her nursing,in fact the two have bonded really well but Im just curious as to whether she is really producing milk or is the kitten just doing this out of habit?

No, she probably isn't producing milk, but the bonding is good for them both. Best wishes

I have a cat and a kitten in a similar situation. My momma has been spayed. I really don't think she's giving any milk. But, her kitty is being pacified.
They absolutely love each other and are inseperable. Maitai is the best mom in the world and her baby Doc never leaves her side. I think it's really sweet. I don't think there is any harm being done.

Any female mammal is able to nurse whether or not they have given birth. If you are pregnant, your body gears up ahead of time so that you will be ready when the baby comes. Otherwise it may take a few days of suckling to get the milk production started.

I know human can still produce milk 8 years after giving birth(even after going "dry". As long as the body is stimulated, that is.
Cats are probally the same way.

A cat this is dropping weight is ill and needs to be seen via a vet before she dies. it is not organic for them to easily drop in weight. once you spot the vet and get her taken care of for what's faulty evaluate the subsequent innovations that I provide you and do study the documents interior the URL's I grant. feeding in basic terms moist good intense protein cat nutrients you will locate your cat would have a strategies much less issues if any in any respect, with crystals, blockages or urinary tract infections. there is likewise a far extra clever possibility of heading off diabetes and a good style of different ailments. additionally he/she would have a extra clever coat of fur and it won't have dandruff and it would be modern. Your cat will attain a good weight - whether she/he needs to benefit or shed some pounds - and he or she/he will consume under a inexpensive can of nutrients full of undesirable protein and carbohydrates. no longer asserting all inexpensive cans are no longer any good. There are some marvelous ones obtainable. you could go away canned nutrients out for all time to feed your cat 24 hours an afternoon. Cats are grazers. Even interior the summertime this is okay to go away out moist nutrients for 12 hours. upload a tablespoon or 2 of water to it so they get extra fluids and so it keeps to be extra moist. the different place to study is what Dr Lisa Pierson DVM has written. She has committed her life to proper diets for cats and tells a thank you to get a cat to alter over from a dry to moist nutrients plan etc. i visit place the URLs on the tip. some fairly good manufacturers are : wellness Innova/EVO style of the Wild Blue Buffalo/wasteland organic stability California organic Felidae Orijen Acana before Grain Nature’s style instinct Dry nutrients is undesirable and does no longer something to scrub a cats teeth. I even have seen cats that are a twelve months previous with rotten teeth and all they ever ate became dry. identifying to purchase nutrients from the vet isn't the terrific high quality nutrients you will locate. In maximum vet colleges the nutrients instructions are given via a puppy nutrients enterprise for free of value to the college, they of direction sell their products and the main inexpensive products for them to make and earn the biggest earnings is the dry factors as this is carbs and inexpensive protein like from corn or rice no longer meat.

you can check your self to see if she is.squeze a teat or look closly then the kitten starts.
and if she is you should stop this as the kitten should not be drinking milk at this age and it will put a great strain to the other cat as she will lose important vitamins.
when the kitten starts squirt it with water. it will soon stop.

Yes, she probably is. My dog never had puppies, but she adopted my ferrets and produced milk for them. A LOT of milk I might add...

The mother cat probably is not producing, the little one is just doing it for 'comfort'.
