I rescued a kitten who im guessing is approx 2-3 months old. One of my two cats had "adopted" her as her baby and the kitten lays with her and kneads her belly and nurses from her. I rescued the older cat also and she has never had kittens since she has lived with me but I believe she had some before. Is the adoptive kitty momma really producing milk? Can cats lactate like that without having been pregnant? The kitten also eats hard food and I don't have a problem with her nursing,in fact the two have bonded really well but Im just curious as to whether she is really producing milk or is the kitten just doing this out of habit?

No, she probably isn't producing milk, but the bonding is good for them both. Best wishes

I have a cat and a kitten in a similar situation. My momma has been spayed. I really don't think she's giving any milk. But, her kitty is being pacified.

They absolutely love each other and are inseperable. Maitai is the best mom in the world and her baby Doc never leaves her side. I think it's really sweet. I don't think there is any harm being done.

Any female mammal is able to nurse whether or not they have given birth. If you are pregnant, your body gears up ahead of time so that you will be ready when the baby comes. Otherwise it may take a few days of suckling to get the milk production started.

I know human can still produce milk 8 years after giving birth(even after going "dry". As long as the body is stimulated, that is.

Cats are probally the same way.

you can check your self to see if she is.squeze a teat or look closly then the kitten starts.
and if she is you should stop this as the kitten should not be drinking milk at this age and it will put a great strain to the other cat as she will lose important vitamins.
when the kitten starts squirt it with water. it will soon stop.

Yes, she probably is. My dog never had puppies, but she adopted my ferrets and produced milk for them. A LOT of milk I might add...

The mother cat probably is not producing, the little one is just doing it for 'comfort'.
