My mother made up our own ''family'' language. She says this is for emergencys that we can comminicate through that language and no one else understands..I think its silly. But is it a good idea?

Absolutely! Especially for children to not get a stranger to go with them. If a stranger approaches and tells a child that his/her mom or dad is hurt if they don't know the password, say it's "chili" a word the parents have set up before hand then the child know that person is a stranger and not to go with them. Extraordinary idea to save the lives of our children.

Yes. It's a good idea. It has to be a real emergency, though. The reason for making it is so that anyone who can hear you -- on the phone or whatever -- doesn't know what you're talking about and doesn't get freaked out when you say it.

Lots of families have their own family words and phrases. If it helps group cohesion, lots of groups have passwords and secret codes and things like that--I'd say go for it. Twins often make up their own language to talk to each other. It's good to learn other languages--more neural pathways, more brain power. Maybe it'll help you learn a foreign language. I think it's a good idea.

having a secret code to commmunicate with your loved ones in an emergency is not a bad idea... you may never need it... but then if you do ever need it you will be pleased you have it..

some of the silly things I taught my kids....

I taught them to speak in a coded pidgin when they were young so I could talk to them so noone else understands... it was a fun thing to do... and we all felt a bit special being able to speeak in our own code...

I taught my kids how to smash a window and that it was okay to do so if they needed to escape a room for an emergency.

I taught my kids to scream out... "Stop. You are not my Mum (or Dad)" if any one else ever tried to pick them up and carry them away... (this one did backfire on me when my son wanted to stay in a shop and I picked him up and carried him out...LOL .. It did take some explaining but I was able to prove he and I were mother and son and the concerned citizens and shop attendants thought it was funny he had used this on me..)

silly or not I did think it was better to be safe than sorry.

It may be somewhat silly, but actually it is a good idea. You never know if something bad can happen, like being robbed or getting taken for hostage. Now don't get me wrong, these things are very unlikely, but they are also not impossible. This may just be silly for now, but if it eventually saves your lives or soemthing, you wont frown so much apon it.

It's a good idea. My mom had a code word for us so that if anyone was to pick us up from school, they would have to tell us the code word. If they didn't know it, we wouldn't go with them. Made her feel like we were safe at school.
