I need to file bankruptcy and I'm wondering how long does the process take.

I understand I have to take a class or something like that.

Shirley C ain't gotta clue, hun. The bankruptcy laws changed 10/05. I assume you are planning to file Chapter 7 which is for a no asset case, and complete liquidation of debt. In that case you do have to go through a 6 month credit counseling session. If that doesn't work then you can file BK 7. It costs around $2000 for an attorney to do it. You may want to file BK-13 try to pay for 6 months to stop creditors from calling, filing suit, leving wages and so forth. If you can't pay then the BK-13 wage earner plan will be dismissed, and you can convert it to a Chapter 7. Then it's 90 days until it's discharged which means all your debt is erased.
