Other than the obvious fact that you would be able to run more than one operating system at a time on one machine. It is also safer since the virtual machine is not connected to your current operating system in any way. So, if your virtual machine gets a virus, your physical machine and your main operating system will not be affected. Once you install a virtual PC program on your computer, you can run any kind of supported operating system.

DOS
Windows 4.1, 95, 98, NT, 2000, ME, XP, XPE
Unix
Linux
BSD
(I cant remember any others right now.)

I hope this clears things up for you.

Virtual PC allows you to emulate(virtualize) a full computer that will run its own OS and software.

This can be good for testing out new software before installing it on the main OS, or for testing out a new OS without installing over your current OS.

Or in a server situation, if the hardware is powerful enough, you can run many virtual servers on one machine. This can reduce space and hardware costs.

Or in a help desk role, since most help desk computers are probably running Windows XP, you can have a Windows 98 virtual pc for reference when helping a customer.

Virtal PC is available free from Microsoft, or VMWare gives VMware Player and VMware Server away for free.

Virtual PC emulates a standard PC and its associated hardware. Thus, it can be used to run nearly all operating systems available for the PC. However, issues can arise when trying to install uncommon operating systems that have not been specifically targeted in the development of Virtual PC.
